Default 944 S3 Conversion

Hey guys!

Im in the mittle of installing a 968 engine and transmission into my '83 944. I got a great deal on the parts, so I couldent pass this oportunity up.

I was told from the company I bought the parts from that in order to install the new transmission, I need to install a 85 1/2 gas tank. Looking at the two tanks, there seems to be some consiterable differences between them. With the new tank, there are 2 gas lines going into the top of the tank where the fuel quantity transmitter is located. Where do these lines go? They wernt on the old tank......

Thanks....

Jared

Well, I can figure out where the lines go, the only problem I have now is how the tank installs into the car. A part of the frame held the old tank in place. It doesent look like the new tank will be able to wedge itself where the old tank went.
The company I purchased the 6 speed transmission from included the transmission mount. The mount quite different than the mounts from my 5 speed. Im starting to think that in newer 944's / 968's that piece of the frame that holds the gas tank up isnt there (replaced with that long transmission mount. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Jared

Cutting? This isn't a very common project, so you might have to wait for some feedback.

Most people talk about grafting a 951 drive train into an n/a, and then lose interest when they find out what it will cost.

How much of the 968 do you have? All the electronics? What company did you buy this stuff from?

What year is your car? I have a 6 speed in my 88, but I have no idea what differences the pre 85.5's had when it comes to the gas tank or the tranny mounts. I have some thing else you might want to be aware of though. Are all pre 85.5's cable driven speedo? Hope so, because If yours takes it's speed reading off of the tranny than you will have to figure out something there too. The 968's read speed from the ABS. Good luck, it's worth it for awhile... Then you'll get used to it and want to turbo charge that 3ltr.

Yea..... Im sure later on I will want the turbo. As of right now, I think the 968 engine drive line will keep me happy for a little while.
I purchased the engine and tranny (along with the radiator, power steering conv, axle, etc...) for about 4000 from an auto wreckage yard. The engine and tranny look to be in great shape.
This tranny mount problem is probably the 1st in many bumps along the road in this conversion process. It looks like the mount process is different between early and late 944's (mine is a 83). The way mine is set up, the tranny bolts in two places to a part of the frame. It looks like this frame member is replaced with the long steel tranny mount for later 944's / 968's. Any suggestions?

this may be out there but i thought the 968 trannys were actually mounted upside down to fit properly in a 944. for sure the tranny will cause your speedo to not work, but there are ways around that. i have read posts in the past of people getting it to work.

as for the tranny being mounted upside down, i am not really sure how this would be done, or even if i read that correctly (just thinking about it now i have no idea how the shift linkage would hook up).

some one please correct me now.

Ive talked to Matt a couple times on the net. He's in the mittle of the S3 engine swap. He's going to keep his stalk tranny, where as I am opting for the 6 speed, which is a whole different animal.

I'm pretty sure all the bolts will line up and the 6 speed should install just fine. IIRC the 5 speed has a bell housing pattern/shape that probably allows for a starter motor that isn't there (that maybe for the front mounted, very similar Audi trannys)

I think that won't be a problem for him. On early 944's the speedometer cable is connected to the front left wheel.

Heres a pic of both the tranny's. The one on the right is the old transmission with the mounts installed. The new 6 speed is a single mount, in the mittle.

The old tranny seems to bolt directly onto the frame, shown below :
