Question How to swap the lock cylinder on the gas cap?

Well I managed to partially destroy my locking gas cap...so I ordered a new one from Paragon...and I need to swap the lock cylinder to the new unit. Well I'm stumped! Do I need a secret decoder ring to do this???

Steve who smells like an old gas tank now...

I dunno, why didn't you just buy a regular cap. We're in the "new millenium" here, there aren't too many people trying to siphon your gas.

Pop off the red plastic cover. All will be revealed.

I just had to replace mine due to cap failing pressure test.
Anyway.. before I ordered one online, I checked the local parts stores. Both AutoZone & Kragen had 3 types of caps. I got a Locking one with 2 keys for 10.95. Fits great

Thanks SoCal! I'll give it a yank to see if it'll pop off for me...as to why replace it...well I sort of like to keep it looking OEM...and not so much worrying about siphoning (though at over $2/gallon it may return!!), I'm more concerned about some prankster throwing something nasty down the tank!!

Here in NJ, you have to have the attendant pump your gas--no "self serve" (why, I don't know). Makes a locking gas cap a PAIN when you have to give the key to the clueless gas station guy!

My dad (who lives in Brooklyn) has a cool gas cap that doesn't need to be removed. It has a trap door in the center that you just jam the filler nozzle into...no problem! Trouble is, in NJ, explaining that the cap isn't supposed to be removed...etc. wouldn't be worth the trouble!

Well I had to pry it off with a screwdriver, but that was the secret. It was a little tough because, ah, it had been run over...don't ask...

Probably not, but there are still plenty of creeps out there who might put "stuff" in your tank and compromise your engine, if you made it easy for them.

Yea some people are like that, I know some jackass did it to my Ford F-150 in Pa (sugar and ****), But it was a junker that I beat on anyway. But that's a whole different ball game. I don't get along with alot of people around there.

On the flip side, can you have a key made for a cap that lost it's key?
