Default HELP, can't figure this one out!!!!

My silver 84 had been sitting for almost a year when I got it. I have taken care of most of the problems, but one keeps coming back. It is not all of the time, just at the worst time.
The car will be running perfect, but when the cooling fans kick on, it starts running like crap. If I give it some gas it will smooth out. It will run fine going down the road, just as long as you don't take your foot off of the gas.
As soon as the fans kick off, all is well. I have changed out several parts, and it will run fine for a few days, then it will start acting up again. Like I said not all of the time, just the worst time, like in traffic on a hill!!!!

My guess is that the cooling fans kicking in puts an extra load on the alternator. Have you tried tightening the accessory belt?

How bad is it?

My old 944 did that. When fan kicked on it would drop in RPM and run a bit more rough....I figured it was the motor mount that I knew needed to be replaced.

I'm not that best at this kind of stuff....but could it be something as simple as a motor mount or vacuum line?

Luis, glad you dropped in. Checked the voltage at the battery with the fans off and car running good, and checked the voltage at the battery with the fans on and car running crappy. There was like a half to 1 volt drop. If I keep giving the car gas it runs smooth. Could it be the fuel pump relay?

Sounds like the alternator to me. Try tensioning the belt first. It has to be pretty tight.

Belt is good and tight. When the fans kick on I only loose a half to 1 volt. It dosen't do it all of the time. It has ran good for 4 days straight, and today it started it again.

Do you have the same problem when you have the ac on and the fans are running?

Check your grounds if the alternator is OK...

Some thoughts
I bet the belt is not screaming when you accelerate, thus more or less OK.
Generator is charging so expected to be not too bad either.
Elevated idle cures the problem, if current idle (without fans running) is below 850 RPM, it requires adjustment.
Model 84, that is 20 years of corrosion on the grounds......
You might want to spend some time on it next weekend...

Yup, I'd go with grounds as well. In addition to cleaning the current (no pun intended) grounds. You may want to add a ground from the engine to the gang ground on the frame, in the front driver's side up by the headlamps.

I forgot to add, this is the car that I converted from a automatic to a 5-speed. I don't think that would have any issues with this problem????

Aux idle regulator for the automatic? When you put an auto into gear you need to pick up the rpms a tad. Could be remnants of this circuit.

So Cal, wouldn't the AIC compensate for that?
