Ot: Xp & Ftp
Sorry about this. Never thought I'd do it, but I don't know where to turn.
We got a new Dell 4600C last fall with Windohs XP. I have not been able to successfully ftp any files over 8.87kb using either WS FTP or CoffeeCup FTP. Every time I go to upload to my web site the transfer stops after the STOR command and/or transfer hits 8.87kb.
I am using Norton Personal Firewall, but even turning it off doesn't change anything. I've tried searching the Microshaft support site and cannot find an answer. Interestingly, I saw something posted by someone having the same or very similar problem, but no response was posted.
I'm getting very frustrated with this.
BTW, I am running a personal network and my old computer is connected to it. My ISP is Earthlink. I can ftp with my old computer running Windohs 95 using WS FTP, so I know it's not a network or ISP problem.
I've loaded all the patches for XP (can't MS produce a product that isn't Swiss Cheese?).
HELP!

Don't really know anything specifically, but http://www.devhood.com/messages/mess...read_id=105615 seems to be having a slightly similar problem. You may want to try what they recommended (switching from active to passive FTP mode).
If that doesn't work I can try and do some more searching for you... it doesn't seem to be a partiularly common problem.
Hope that helps,

Check out "Smart FTP". It's freeware... download from www.zdnet.com
I had a similar issue with Coffee Cup when I started uploading vids to my site.

One way. withing Internet Explorer. Click File.. Open... Type http://ftp.whatever.com/etc/etc.. or http://www.whatever.com:80 etc... then check the box that says " Open as web folder "
I forget how to add a network place, but every since Win 2000 came out and then of course XP, you can easily add a folder to your system that is actually a remote location. I stopped using FTP applications all together.
sorry, but my brains a bit rusty

Well, I tried Smart FTP. No joy. I logged into the Earthlink member support site and confirmed I had everything correct (pretty much knew it had to be because I can see the bloody files).
I'm still at a loss for this. I believe it has to be an XP issue - especially since the download starts and it stops at the same point. Grrrr.

Pay to play - all the good FTP's are worth the money. Been using CuteFTP and WSFTP for years without problem. Of the free stuff out there, i like LeechFTP the best. I believe there are 30-day trials of the pay stuff - just to be sure it's going to do what you want.

I've tried WS FTP, CoffeeCup FTP, and Smart FTP. I am running WS FTP on my old computer, hooked up to the same home network, running through the same router. WS FTP works just fine on my old computer.
I'm pretty convinced my problem is an issue with XP since I have the exact same problem with all FTP clients on my new machine.
Interestingly, I can connect to my Earthlink ftp site, view files and folders, and even transfer files smaller than 8.87kb. This is driving me insane. Damned computers.
