Default Lowering the car-need some help

I lowered my 88 turbo with new springs in the front, and adjusting the eccentric bolts in the rear. The rear only came down 1/2"-I figured that was o.k. Sitting next to two other 944's (and S2, and a Turbo), the rear of my car is noticibly HIGHER. To the tune of 1", and 1/2". I put new bilsteins on all the way around at the same time-do they need to "settle in"?

I have no reson to believe that my car was at anything but factory ride height. Does anyone have the correct factory measurements? Anybody with an eccentric adjustment that can give me the measurements for their car? How does it look? Mine has a slight rake to the front...

So now the million dollar question. I am now looking at re-indexing the torsion bars. How difficult of a procedure is that...and does anyone have a tutorial?

Thanks guy's-

The only way to go any lower in the rear is to re-index the t-bars.
Tifosiman has done it and will be helping me do mine in a couple weeks. He may have a tutorial or if you can wait, I'll take notes and post them when mine is done.

It's a lot of work to do the t-bars. Here is the best tutorial I have ever seen (Thanks OZ!)

http://www.oz951.com/public/docs/Torsionbarsetup.doc

Here is the stance of mine with coil-overs all-round and re-indexed t-bars.

Can't access OZ's page - says I need a username/password?

Here's ours: http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index...x_v2&id=66&c=4

Hard to see from here, but you really do need to let the suspension settle for at least 50-100 miles. Also, get some real measurements on a completely level surface. The center of the car where it is flat below the door is a good place to measure rake (differential of front-to-rear height). Most street cars benefit from positive rake (front lower than rear) - no more than a half inch in the case of the 944 is good.

Your fellow KCWS members know t-bars, too.

Good Luck!

Here is mine.

I don't go into the install remove procedure, but do take the mystery out of reindexing the bars so you don't have to do it twice.

Worked for my when I put 28mm bars in my spec car and again when I installed 30 mm bars.

Here are the instructions and a few pics...

(edited Post as I have new complete link with pics etc )

Re-Index your torsion bars the easy way- Now with pics!

So I guess by reading the tutorials, there is no way to just re-index without taking the whole rear suspension (trailing arms, brake lines, sway bar, etc) apart correct? Man, turning into a bigger job than I was first imagining.

Cass, yours seems a touch lower than mine. Could I ask you to measure from the wheel arches, and the bottom of the door sill-please-whenever you have the chance...

Don't neglect your front ball joints when lowering. They will bind on lowered cars using standard aluminum arms and cause extreme ball joint failure if not corrected.

shameless plug but something to think about. I had it happen to me on my lowered 86 NA. Its not a pretty sight when your wheel goes one way and your car goes the other.... and so the GCK was born.

HI M8NC - I lowered my car front and rear so that the tops of each wheel arch was 25 1/4" from the ground. could go lower, but i'd have to readjust the torsion bars. So you should be able to get this low at least

seems as though some cars go lower than others w/ just the accentrics. I would imagine this is due to worn torsion bars, making the car lower before they are adjusted down to begin with. My car is pretty low w/ the accentrics adjusted, but nine-44's car still sits high w/ them adjusted. I have seen some as low as mine w/o adjusting the accentrics.

it seems to me pre 86 cars are always WAY higher. when mine and damians cars were next to eachother before I had ever done anything to mine, my car was deffenitly lower. especially the rear.

Ben
I just went through the whole ordeal. I can come down and show you how to reindex. As long as you have a shop I can help! Be prepared to align after lowering as it will be way off but we can get it close enough to drive to the rack. Also buy all new bushings for the rear!
I am in DM so I am only 2 hours away. Dal

Dal-

You'd better just come down to hang out. There is a big water-cooled collection down here, if you haven't checked the website. I was in Des Moines yesterday, calling on customers, I'm getting to know the city fairly well.

On the car, at the suggestion of some, I am waiting for the car to go 100 miles before I make a decision. I really don't want the pain of re-indexing if I don't need it. I'm going to see if the car will settle more. It is better than when I started.

Travis, explain the ball joint gig for me-either here, or on KCWS (I go by Ben there)...thanks.
