Default Reference sensor Plug? How to Fix?

Hey guys I have been trying to trouble shoot my No-spark 86 951. I think this is the culprit its the one labeled "BG" and is closest to the engine. As you can see in the pics the plug that goes into the engine harness is shot. The wires inside have cracked sheathing and might not be connected inside the plug. How can I fix this? can I splice in one that is in better shape? Also is this most likely the cause of my no spark, while cranking the tach does NOT move at all...? It was running before I took off the manifold to replace vaccum lines and I assume moved or tugged on this too much.

Thanks,
Zack

Picture is fuzzy and it's a bit difficult to tell, but it looks like some of the wires are broken. If so, then that is your problem. These cars will not start if the sensor is unplugged or otherwise damaged. I've never replaced one myself, so I'll have to let someone else give you the skinny on the "how to".

Hey, i had the EXACT same problem. I got a replacement plug from porsche, with the connectors, and it still didn't work right. The ground wire is shielded, and really can't be spliced. I tried to shortcut it for about a month, to no avail. I finally bought a replacement wiring harness and swapped it out. Contrary to what people might tell you here, the wiring harness is very easy to replace, you just have to pull the intake manifold. I would plan on just replacing the harness. The connector plug alone from porsche was like 17 bucks.

....I would use a carving knife set on those plugs...

It will take a little surgical work but you should be able to cut it back and resolder the connections... cut off as little as needed. Pull back the rubber....

I use liquid electrical tape (for lack of a better name)...... then wrap with rubber heat wrap (again can't remember the exact name) and she will be good as new.....

If its the sensor off the flywheel it would explain your no spark scenario (more than likely no injector pulse either). The sensor reads off the flywheel pin.

A harness seems like it would be an expensive piece anyone know where I can get one new or used for reasonable money? I might try to fix the harness with a new plug first, anyone else have input on this? This car has been such a pain and money pit and I have only driven it once:-(

I can tell you what NOT to do.

I had the same problem and, being good with electricals decided to do as AlexE suggested.

Bought nice msd 6plug replacement

Cut harness plug and opened it up to find a real mess!

One of the wires is unsheilded and winds AROUND the other two. It was very delicate and somewhat brittle...ie...impossible(nearly) to splice.

My car does run after but I know I need a new harness to fix this.

Anyone have prices on new harnesses?

Just post a message saying you are looking for a turbo wiring harness on here, someone has got to be parting a car out. Seems like the reference/speed sensor plugs are really the only ones that are difficult to splice into.

You can just cut off the wiring about 4" from the connector and install a new one. The problem is the stress-riser caused by the sudden transition from a flexible-wire into a stiff connector. Also people like to pull on the little loop of wire going to the connector to remove it without first unclipping the troublesome rectangular spring-clips (a no-no).

So just buy four new injector connectors from NAPA Auto Parts and you'll be fine. These have the newer-style finger-operated spring-clips. The wires are pre-installed, so you can just solder them to your existing wires with butt-splices and shrink-wrap over:

when my wires disconnected like that, i simply cut off the connectors and crimpped in 3 sets of butt connectors. the shield/wrap ground requires a very careful hand. all that tinkering with R/C cars and car audio equipment actually payed off! then i just wrapped all the connectors up very firmly with electrical tape and haven't had the slightest problem.

Whoops, sorry I got those mixed up with injector connectors. Matt found replacement connectors for the speed/ref. sensors.

I have never seen a wire that couldn't be spliced, ratheon even makes kits for splicing triax.
