I think he meant the coupler in front of the transmission, that connects the torque tube shaft to the transmission input shaft.

Will a 951 transaxle will bolt into a 944 without modification? How different are the gear ratios?

The 951 tranny is a simple bolt-in. Much stronger. So far, no problems with mine. There's a link somewhere with a comparison chart showing ratios.
