Question A/C Drainage is Clogged--How to unclog?

A short time ago my a/c (89 944 n/a) started blowing out droplets of water, and I concluded that the unit is not properly draining the condensed water. I haven't been able to locate where the tube/hose is under the car that is most likely clogged, and was wondering if anyone knew exactly where that is. A picture would help.
Thanks!

Gordon,

On my 83 the A/C drain is on the right side of the car, just behind the firewall. Its a plastic tube about 1/4" that bends toward the rear of the car. Its the only thing there that looks anything like a tube. The A/C on your 89 is different, but I suspect that the drain is in about the same location.

Cool

Hi Gordon...

The ac drain on your '89 should be accessable from the passenger footwell and will be found just behind the radio. My drain blocked up and filled the glove box and finally overflowed onto the floor. A tremendous amount of water can be held under the dash.

I could find nothing blocking my drain hole however and it has been suggested by some that a bolt or nut can fall off inside the catch basin and intermittantly block the tube. Do a search for more details and photos of what that catch basin looks like inside.

Good luck!!!

Oh, and take care of that soon because the water cascading over the cd player destroyed the unit.

gordon,
the easiest way to drain the catch basin is:
jack up the passenger side of the car (secure with jack stand...disclaimer)
slide under and TAKE A FLASHLIGHT WITH YOU! i miss it every time unless i take one.
you're looking for a small, black nubbin of a rubber tube
its ABOVE the torque tube - right in the center.
i have found a hose that fits right into the drain hose - i just slide it in there and then blow.
there will be a LOT of water that comes out - be prepared.

i'm exploring drilling about a 1" hole in the bottom of the catch basin so i can see whats in there.
still pondering....but that should temporarily cure your problem - and maybe permanently.

good luck

here is the easy way to do it......remove the side screws and rear screws from the console, slide the console back a few inches. You should see the bottom of the airbox with a rubber tube going into the transmission hump. Have some towels handy and remove the tube. The radio is slid forward and water runs downhill so the radio will be safe, and if you positioned your towel correctly the towel will absorb 90% of the water. If no water comes out, don't worry the next step will bring the flood....use the ball end of a heavy wound guitar string and ream out the opening of the airbox...moldy gunk and water should come streaming onto your towel. Make sure the rubber drainage tube is clear and reinstall it. Put the console in place and crank up the A/C....you are good to go.

I just got under the car and used a metal coat hanger, pushed it in and out of the hose hole above the torque tube. No stoppage since.

that'll work just great if your blockage is below the point where the tube turns into a little Z right under the airbox...glad it worked for you - you got lucky!!!
