Default Strut mount bushings (EARLY)

I've been doing a little R&R (Research and Reading) I came across come info about using VW Fox strutmount inserts in the early 944 housings.
Heres a couple threads where its mentioned:

Now I was thinking ok, sounds, good, well why not use a Poly version? But one thing Im not clear on, is the 944 ones have the Bearing molded in, and also some thing about the bottom bearing race or flange? (i've not messed with the 944 strutmounts before, so with out having a set in hand Im not 100% sure what they are referring to.

here is the poly version (Only $26 a pair)

Does the bearing being molded in matter or not?

If I remember I can look at a spare set of these I have. The bearing is pretty loose in there, it is not encased in rubber but a very minor press-fit.
Where are those poly ones from ?

any more input here? I thought there might be more interest as most peoples strut mounts are probably quite worn.

Is there really a need to replace with poly?

The rubber does a pretty good job there, it’s cheap and lasts a long time, plus poly has its own issues like being annoyingly squeaky in some situations.

I’m all for upgrades but I think poly is a downgrade on that part.

I agree 100% with this. That’s some dense rubber. Next step would be something like the Ground Control-type set-up.

i havent held a super beetle one by comparison (that someone said was soft) but the 944 original mounts are pretty squishy too.

despite their crustiness these ones are in good shape but the bearings are toast. the bearing is a light friction fit in the conical washer (which is bonded to the rubber) but the bearing knocks right out easily.

you would need to either somehow salvage the old conical washer or find something new suitable

Not sure but this is a timely thread as I am working in the area of the strut mounts so I might grab a set of the Fox pieces to check them out.

One of your links above had a guy comparing 944, SuperBeetle, and Fox mounts and found that the 944 mounts were actually softer than the SB, and the Fox were the stiffest to his hand at least.

There are a few vendors offering Fox mounts, be interesting to know if there is a difference between them or if they are all the same stiffness.

Mevotech #MP901941 $12.18

DEA #4713056 $15.73

Moog #K9622 $18.18

Sachs #802 815 $21.73

Monroe #901941 $29.98

If memory serves, my Fox items came from FCP (relatively local to me; a good parts house in my experience) … they were maybe $20-25 each and came from an aftermarket Brazilian supplier (as do so many VW items). They’re really dense/solid, and went on my struts with new Sachs inserts. But all that said, I’m a 924/44 neophyte so have little context as to how one thing compare to another.

I put fox strut mounts in my car a few months back when I refreshed the front suspension...I have only driven a few miles so far but no problems. They were maybe 5-10 dollars each so compared to the factory parts, the savings was immense.

Ordered some Fox mounts just to check them out.
Look good. New out of the box they are 8mm taller than the ancient 944 pieces. The rubber is definitely a lot firmer on the Fox.
Not sure when I'll actually install them but I'll come back to this thread when that happens.
