Well of course it's not the oldest or the longest but 259,000 miles (not kilometers) on my '89 S2 - still with no sign that it's going to go yet.
Original exhaust too.

NON PORSCHE RELATED, but I think it's interesting..

There was a buddy of mine in HS who bought a 1974 Volvo (240?) wagon from his dad with 185K miles on it- original clutch, He sold it to his younger sister in 1985 when it had 300K. In 1995 it was still running, most of the engine had been rebuilt- the clutch had been replaced at 350K and 650K miles.

Last I heard in 2002 the SOB was still running with over 775K miles.

Oh! had a new master cylinder last year and after my winter holiday the pedal went all the way to the floor but pumped back up after I topped up the reservoir - so it looks like it's going to need a new slave soon (if not now).

By the look of the grins on either side... I'm guessing your dad isn't selling it?!?! I haven't kept up with the two threads in the past day.

I have just a under 165000 on my clutch... as far as I and the PO know, it's original!

101000 miles, just recently the hub went out, driving on the stopps right now. As far as I know it's original clutch from 83.

I dont know why anyone would say the rubber centered clutch isn't durable! Most get over 100k/15 years on em before being replaced. That tells me a new rubber centered clutch should last way longer than the car it's going into, right?

I heard the spring clutches make more noise and are harsher--the rubber ones are nice and quiet...and smooth. Aside from someone who is tracking their car...why get the spring centered clutch at all?

Because the rubber centered unit is considerably more difficult to find - especially from a reputable vendor. Not impossible - but difficult and somewhat cost-prohibitive.

When it came time for a clutch replacement on the 85, I was specifically on the hunt for a rubber-centered unit. However, my mechanic (who, thank god, is vastly more realistic than I am) noted that assuming I could find a NIB rubber-centered unit, the potential that it had sat around for 10 years was a very realistic one. Installing a 10-year old rubber component in a car (especially when you don't know where it was stored... etc) probably isn't the greatest idea out there.

Anyway, after going to the Spring centered Sachs (and not paying much for the kit at all - yet another bonus) I'm very happy with it. I can't really tell a difference between it and the rubber-unit. I, too had heard rumors about it being more temperamental than the original but I certainly haven't experienced that.

The new spring clutches are very nice... A huge improvement over the rubber center.
