Default 951 Motor Mounts

Per my service records the motor mounts on my '89 951 were last changed in 2001 when the car had 67k miles on it. It's since developed a wicked shake at idle so I suppose its time to do it again.

A couple of questions:

1. Is there a way to test the current motor mounts to isolate them as the problem before I potentially drop $650 on replacement parts?
2. Are Porsche genuine motor mounts still the way to go or have any of the after-market parts caught up in terms of longevity?

Most of the threads I've been able to find on this forum are from several years ago so I just wanted to take a new baseline reading from the community.

Thanks.

If I had to guess, your car is not running right at idle RPMs. These cars should not have a wicked shake even with solid motor mounts.

I did mine recently. My conclusion was Porsche parts was the only reliable option.

That being said, I also had a lower balance shaft 180º out, and I've still got a little bit of vibration right above idle that I need to sort....

Thanks, jeyjey pretty much confirmed what I thought.

The vibration in the steering wheel is what I meant by "wicked shake." It's not like the whole car is shuddering or anything, but definitely an annoyance.
I guess I'll have to get under there and measure the mounts to make sure everything is in spec...no need to drop money on something that may not be the problem.

OEM mounts only. Learn from my mistake, I bought Meyle and they lasted a year and less than 3k miles before it was completely collapsed. This is to hard of job to do twice like I just did. I wasted $150 on the Meyle mounts and then $650 ish on the OEM. The OEM mounts are smooth as silk.

Yeah, I can appreciate that and your experience is similar to what I've read on the posts over the past few years.
I went out and measured them today per Clark's Garage instructions. Mine are below 60mm so they have to go.
Wish me luck, fellows.

I've had the "crappy" solid rubber non-OEM ones on my car for 13 years (changed in Dec 2008) And I hardly notice a difference when in other 944s with factory mounts. I've had the engine out 5 times, and each time upon inspection they were fine.
