campeck's car.. should he be able to keep it?
For anyone who didn't read the "campeck" thread below here is the story. He took the 944, that his dad and him have been working on for a while now, around the block for a total of 30 miles. The problem with this is that he does not have his drivers license yet. His dad , (Airbop), found out and is now selling the car on Ebay.
This is an interesting situation. We do not have any official say in what goes on but it would be nice to know the thoughts of Rennlist as a group on this subject. Anyone with more information or good arguments please state them.

But let's try to influence that opinion.

Ok, I'm torn on this one, I mean I got mine at 16, and It was amazing. So I don't want to see him lose his car, but he REALLY should not have driven it. Like everyone says, its totally his Dad's decision, and that has to be respected, as driving the car did show a lock of respect for his father. I do hope for some sort of compermise though, I can't imagine being forced to part with my car for some stupid reason, and it was stupid to drive the car. That said, something should be worked out, perhaps postpone when you can get a drivers license, or take the car away for a while. Also, Aribop, your kid screwed up, but it certainly could be a lot worse, he should be punished, but perhaps throwing away the car is not the answer, all the work you two did is worth a great deal. One of my favorite memories of my car is when my Dad and I put in a radiator, and when we first test drove it. Don't let him off, but perhaps the car needn't go.

IMHO I dont think he should dump the car. Maybee suspend his privalage of driving it for like a year. That way campbell (spelling?) has something to look foward to, but if he f-cks up again then get rid of it. Like I said only MHO.

i bought my firebird when i was 14. got my learners permit a few months after my 16th, passed the road test a few months later.
the law in NY was i got my license on my 17th. in my garage was a firebird convert with dish mags, and a stump pulling 350 ready to go.
the deals i had with my folks were between me and them. i did not appreciate neighbors commenting on my choice of vehicle, and the deals i had with my folks. i dont think we should be commenting on someone elses family matters.
If this part of the ebay description was from a non board member, you guys would be flaming away.
"The seller shall not be responsible for the correct description, authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein, and makes no warranty in connection therewith. "

I think this is ridiculous.
First off, around the block a few times, about 30 miles? Something doesn't add up here. Where I come from around the block a few times will be more like 3 miles at most, so campeck isn't being completely honest here, which certainly rubbs me the wrong way. For some perspective: 30 miles travelling at 60mph is about half an hour of driving. Since I'm sure he wasn't on the highway the entire time he had the car I'm led to the conclusion that he had the car out for longer than half an hour- once again, more than around the block a few times.
Second, if someone bought me a Porsche (hell, if someone bought me any car) with the condition being that I don't drive it until I have my license, you better damn well believe I wouldn't drive it until I have my license. And on top of that it's against the law. And on top of that it's dangerous since campeck obviously doesn't have the driving experience that people who have been driving for a while do. My daddy never bought me a car, and he certainly never took the time to work on one with me. The fact that campeck ignored the one request his father made about the car is pretty inconsiderate, and quite honestly I think it's disgusting.
Third, on top of all that I said above, as has been mentioned, if campeck got into an accident, or in any kind of trouble, his father could have been held liable; essentially held liable for spending all that time and money with a son who didn't appreciate his one request.
The fact that Aribop is willing to sell the car after all that money has been invested in it just goes to show how unimportant the financial aspect of the situation is to him compared to the moral aspect. If I was campeck I'd be really thankful that I had a father like his, and accept the consequenses of my actions. It's a 944, it's not like his dad is selling a maclaren. If campeck decides he wants one again he'll be able to buy one, and maybe when it's with his own money he'll appreciate it more.
And just for the record, I'm not some angry, sour, nasty old man who is taking out my frustrations on my own kids here. I'm 25, and I don't have any kids or plan to any time soon. I just find it really upsetting to see people not appreciate things that I would have loved and never had. If my father had offered to buy me a Pinto or some other POS to work on together, I'd be extremely grateful just to spend the time with him.

i've done stupid things, nothing quite that serious, but stupid nonetheless. i'm all for second chances, thats why i voted that way. it is entirely between campeck and his father, and that's how it'll be settled i'm sure. while i'm sure aribop was indeed angry at what campeck did, i'm sure he's not totally unreasonable (although he did buy his 14 year old son a pcar...), and he'll probably make a decision that will benefit them both the best.
all in all, it's my opinion that selling the car that they just put all that time and money into for what would be a most likely minimal profit is not a good idea at all. both of their interests would be better served by finding some alternate way to punnish campeck without inciting a loss of time, money, and a fabulous pcar like that.
and tom, who says we won't be flaming away...
