No, the GTR resembles a 70. While it (the GTR) has headlights behind the little horizontal black panels, those panels are drawn totally from the 1970 Mustang.

In this case, the SCCA Pro Racing Trans Am series came before the Pontiac Trans Am. Pontiac pays (paid?) a royalty to the SCCA for every Trans Am sold.

Well, I stand corrected. However I was talking about the production version, which is technically not the "R" or concept car.
The production version was inspired by the 69 sportsroof. My mistake.

I must say this is the first real American car that has inspired me in some time. Mind you the new GT-40 isn't bad, but the new Mustang is nice. If they are keeping the live rear axle, hopefully they went the way of the Griggs Racing rear axle setup rather than keeping those awful quadra links which were perfect at binding up in a corner and suddenly letting loose and giving you a lot of flopping around. Also hopefully they have locked the rear axle under the car so that the rear of the car doesn't slide back and forth over top of it.

My cousin had an 83 GT and I've had two 90s, a 5.0 hatch and a GT (liked the LX 5.0 looks much better). I liked the 94 restyling and the vertical taillights rocked, but the latest "hard lined" one sucks. Big fake air vent on the side of the car and all. I hate fake stuff like that....if it's there, it needs to be functional.

Anyway, I do like this and I do very much agree with Skip. No rice there. That is a full-out car setup to race, fully functional. I like that paint scheme, but I'd love to see one fully painted up with numbers ready to get on the track..... If someone made me buy a new American car, one of these is where I'd go. Not been super thrilled with the Corvette of late and they ruined the Viper with those ugly headlights and such of late.

And how does this car look like a Japanese car? Those styling cues are fantastic and really remind you of a futuristic version of those late 60s Mustangs. These cars have style and attitude, something most vehicles are lacking now. It's got personality. That's what makes it nice to look at. Now I need to drive one and see how it stacks up.....

I see where we are getting signals crossed. I was referring to the standard 2005 Mustang concept that draws directly from the 65-69 Mustang with various styling changes to the models based on trim package. The standard GT appears to also be available with centre mounted driving lights - but, the main front styling cue is the extreme edge and inset headlights - as shown in the attached picture with the reference coupe in the background:

I can now see the points of the GT-R that made you think 70 BOSS 302 - the slits on the outer edge with headlights inside. But, since the outside slits in the GTR are lights, you are, unfortunately, wrong.

Oh yeah, I agree with you completely about the standard model.

The GTR is HOT. I just cannot wait to see one on the race track. I have a hard time believing they are going to sell it for $40k. If so, what am I doing building an IT car?

If this thing is going to sell for $40k I think it will be the best factory produced race car deal since the 935.

Ahem.......

From the FoMoCo web site......

http://media.ford.com/newsroom/featu...?release=17442

"Outside, the bright Valencia Orange Mustang GT-R is inspired by the famous Grabber Orange 1970 Mustang Boss 302 Trans-Am race cars (the Yellow Mustangs) piloted by race legends including Parnelli Jones. "

street legal?
I doubt it's a live rear axle. Pretty sure the SVT is independant, and as this is more than a drag car and the research has been done, it must be independant.
