Talking Boxster engine

Has anyone ever (seriously?) considered putting a Boxster engine in a 944? Both are Porsche engines, and possibly it could be done: PROS: with adapters etc, and with updated electronics. 300 BHP sounds good too, plus availability of current parts. I have looked online for the physical dimensions, but have been unsuccessful so far. The weight is about 450 lbs. The 6 speed trans is about another 100 lbs.. CONS: wiring...size in 944 engine bay, upgrading of wheels and brakes, adapters to the TT & driveshaft and bellhousing. AND they use a double plate clutch. Not to mention the headache of actually doing it. It might be an interesting project though for some one besides me..Just arm chairing the thought of it.

chances are it's about 6-8 inches wider than the 944 engine bay, assuming its similar in dimensions to a typical DOHC chain drive Subaru engine.

The Boxster engine is a flat six design, isn't it? That wouldn't really fly in the 944 engine bay.

Then put it in the back, fit a transfer case in the front, and make an all wheel drive 944 like the factory did.

Place the engine behind the rear wheels? That's just pure silliness!!

FWIW..The newer (781?) engine is a 4 cylinder turbo engine. Perhaps it's not the length of a flat 6 (3 cylinders long) but the width like V2 says..Not being able to find the width dimensions online is the kicker. Both engines are water cooled, so that's a plus. ..Don't forget that the 911, 912,& 914's engines hang out behind the rear axle? VW, Delorean, Renault, and several others has used this config. I agree, to put this amount of mass behind the rear axle is anchronistic. IMHO all major mass stuff should be within the parameters of the 4 wheels, and pretty much balanced out within the structure. Still armchair/concept engineering, with beer in hand. LOL!

Where did the gas tank go? And, is that a 924 convertible behind it?

Just a minor correction but the 914 is midengine so it's in FRONT of the rear axle.
I previously owned a 914; there were some owners with project cars inserting a Boxster engine in them, but even given the 914s mid-engine design, the Boxster engine is still too big to fit without major body modification as I understand

A friend of mine built a Racecar based on a 944 with a aircooled 964 turbo engine in the front so a flatsix can be made to fit the 944 enginebay.

I totally considered shoving in a cayenne engine in there. A boxster engine would be interesting though.

I just came across this thread on one of my rare visits to the forum for old time's sake, I just happen to have a Boxster engine on my engine stand waiting to be swapped into my 2000 base Boxster. It is 36" wide 22" long and 24" high. At 36" changing spark plugs or coils would be an engine out operation. The problem is that in the Boxster the engine if forward of the coil towers, whereas in the 944 you have to fit between them.
The better option would be a rear mid-engine installation of both the engine and transmission from the Boxster, that is in the rear seat area. I saw somewhere that someone has done this, I don't remember what the engine was.

Default Boxster

Good info, there Elgy. I had forgotten about all this from a couple of years back. Good luck on the re-install. Presume that you changed out the IMS bearing? Any chance of changing out “jugs and pistons on the boxster engine like you could on the old beetle engines, while it’s on the stand? Just wondering. Glad to see you’re still on the forum.😀
