Unhappy Bad News!!!!

well $2000 later of working on my car and still not running. It all started when the wastegate was installed backwards and cause me to go through two headgaskets, rebuilt top end, redone oil pan gasket twice. After all of this i took it back to the shop and now they tell me i have 45%leakage by the piston rings. Man when does it stop. I have no idea how long this is going to take and how much it is going to take. I think i might just bring it home and start working on it myself and see if that save me a lot of money. how much money you think it will cost to do it myself and how much for a shop to do it for $70 an hour.

I think you're going to the wrong shop.

Well, if you do it yourself, you're only paying for parts...maybe a few pizzas and some beer if some Rennlisters are nice enough to drop by and help you out.

With the shop, I'd say you're in at least another 6 hours, at 70 bucks per hour...if they have to do a bottom end rebuild, you're looking at a good $500+ easy. Probably much more. And parts will cost you more from them as well.

I've done plenty of 4 cyl rebuilds, it's not that difficult. I can do the rings on most late model VW's in about 2.5 hours start to finish. I'd say give it a Sat and Sun for your first try...one day for tear down, one day to re assemble. Shouldn't be that bad.

Best of luck!

well i was going to have them rebuild the bottom end when i had the top end done except they told me that there is some cage on the bottom where they can't get to it without pulling the engine or some bull**** like that. I have to contact him tomorrow he said maybe we can make a deal if they do the rings but not sure how that is going to go.

What kind (size) wastegate do you have? I am having issues trying to get my 46mm Tial installed properly as well, and it has caused me a LOT of headaches as well, so I sympathize with you

I am still working on my WG issue... hoping to fix it tonight- its in backwards now I am pretty sure, so it just makes full boost, which is 26-30PSI with my TUrbo....not good. Have gone through 2 headgaskets and 2 engines because of this wastegate

Daniel there has been brand new in box piston rings on ebay for like 150$ no one ever bought them that I know of they come up every other week or so. Worth checking them out.
