Default Am I gambling with my water pump?

My 1987 951 has 30,500 miles and the water pump has not been replaced. I have no coolant leaks. I have been waiting to see coolant leaks and then have the water pump replaced.

Is this a smart thing to do? Do I risk having the water pump fail in mid-Summer far from home?

Thus, your waterpump has been in there for 17 years?

I'd change it. Plus you get to check on the belts and the rollers at the same time. It's like buying insurance for peace of mind.

You need to change the belts and at the same time just change the water pump. Not only mileage hurts belts, but also time.

No way I'd trust a 17 year old pump, the potential cost is just too high. I (like many 'listers) change the pump with every other belt change, using that standard you'd be due for pump number three right now.

with these cars you're always gambling with the WP, just don't take such bad odds and change it with a NEW WP.

When you do the change, be prepared to have several broken/seized waterpump bolts.

Holy crap. That is a low mileage Porsche. PICS!!!
I can relate to your problem. My car was sitting in storage for over 5 years. Accroding to the records, the water pump and belts were only done 10,000km before the 73,000km when I bought it. That's not long ago in mileage, but the date of the work was 1992
Get it done, now, it's not worth the risk, especially with a nice car like yours!

My car just turned over 100,000 - I had the belts done along with the pump, T-stat and front seals. The car only had 59,000 original miles on it when I bought it in '01 and it had the original belt and pump. Personnally? I will change BOTH every 30,000 miles. Why take the chance for $150 bucks+/-?
