Default Finished auto to 5-speed conversion

I finally took the time to finish it. I got the clutch bled, rest of the exhaust hangers on. Had the charger on the battery, thinking that the battery was still good. Got in the car to start it ( see where this is going), no start. Starter was clicking. At this point, I was so excited about trying it out, me and my nephew(building the car for him), pushed it out in the street. Since he is 18 yrs younger than me, I told him to push as fast as he could. Poped the clutch, and............ It started. It actually ran great. Shifted good, no clutch problems.
As far as someone thinking of doing this. IT AIN'T THAT BAD. It took me a couple of nights to get it apart. Then a couple of nights to take the doner apart and a couple of more nights to put it back together. I probley spent a total of 24 hrs. working on it.
If anyone has questions about doing this, please drop me a e-mail, It would make me happy to share some experience with this conversion with someone else.

You should write an article on what all you needed and how you did it! It'd be a real valuable resource!

I plan on sitting down and doing a write up. Like I said before, it was really not that bad. It was a simple bolt in operation. The only cutting that you have to do, is the bracket under the shifter that the auto shifter mounted to. It has to be cut out for the shifter rod to move, and for the shifter to be able to move as needed.

If you're giving away the auto and torque tube I'd be more than happy to take them off your hands =]

Good for you!

As time goes on, I imagine that more and more of these cars that "survive" (not wrecked) and are in decent condition will be automatics. So any conversion info you can share would be great!

Scott, I will be the first to say, the power and the reliablity that you have is pretty hard to beat. I know that you take a lot of heat about the conversion, but when you were flying down 840 a few weekends ago, like I have said before, people saw a Porsche flying by, not a Chevy power Porsche but a PORSCHE.
I will start ASAP on doing a write up on the conversion from auto to 5-speed. Another Rennlister that has a 85.5, who has had the worst luck of anyone on here( busted the belt, swapped the head, shot a rod out the bottom a week later) has a auto that needs a motor that he is thinking of converting. I have most of the stuff including a motor. Bart if you read this give me a call

Nothing stood out being any harder than anything else. I guess the most PITA thing for me was taking the bake lines loose in the back to drop the rear suspension to get the tourque tube's swapped out. I like to make things happen, and being able to turn the connectors just a fraction at a time, well it just wasn't fun!!!!! The whole conversion is just like doing some of the other work on other parts. You are going a little futher than a clutch job. Like I said, it is a complete bolt in operation, except for cutting the auto shifter bracket. The hole for the clutch master cylinder and the studs are already there.
