Default Moving to Charlotte...Need some P-Car info!

My place of employment has decided to stop buying office space in midtown New York and has instead built a huge complex within the University Park area in northern Charlotte, NC.

Anyway yours truly has been selected to be one of the "pioneers" in the new facility. I won't be leaving until July but I'd like to begin preparing now. At least in the beginning I will be using my Cab as my daily driver (it's the only car I have) since my apartment will have a garage as well as my job.

So since I'll be leaving my trusted Powertech mechanics behind, can anyone give me any recommendations of knowledgable techs in Charlotte? Also how is the local PCA chapter there? Finally anything in general I should know about moving there that my relocation specialist might neglect to tell me?

Thanks for the help!

Congrats, charlotte is a good city (that I happen to be leaving in two weeks) it is not quite NY (ok its not even close) but there is a good deal to do and the weather is beautiful).

Anyway, for a good porsche tech, I will say you only have one choice and that would be Eurowerks. They are in indian trail NC which is a good deal south of where you are, but the quality of the work thats done at this shop, as well as the qaulity of those who were there will make the trip worth while.

The PCA chapter is ok, they don't put on a lot of events that interest me, but they do host 4 DE's a year and have a fairly active following.

Jim Burton at Eurowerks 704-882-6466. He's building a new shop down past Matthews and is also on the Rennlist. Also, Bill Swart at Stuttgahrt Haus is a good source of used parts in the area 800-356-4379. He also repairs cars. Bill is in Mooresville. Both of these little bergs are just outside Charlotte.

PCA is somewhat active in Charlotte. If you get a chance to come down, we should arrange another Rennlist Beer/Tech night.

I grew up in Charlotte and remember the days when you could get across town in 15 minutes. You're not doing that now legally and safely. There are a number of northern transplants in Charlotte now, in fact, it's rare to meet a native anymore, so the city is starting to feel more like Atlanta. HTH

I am one of the few natives that Dave mentioned, and I can say that we are rare here now (my wife and I are the only ones on our whole street that are natives).

I agree with everyone else Eurowerks is the place to go if you need anything their number is 704-882-6466, Jim and Keith are both excellent mechanics. Now that the outerbelt is open out to the university it should not take more than 20 minutes to get to his shop unless you hit traffic.
The local PCA is the largest in the country, and they always have something going on. They do not have alot of auto-x's but if you are looking for other things they might have something for you. Check out their website and you can read the online newsletters and such to see if they have anything that will intereest you.
We do have a pretty good group of 944 owners here, and have a beer night everynow and then.

Welcome!

I have to put in a vote for EuroWerks as well. I've known Keith for as long as I have owned a 944 (I'm on my 3rd, just bought an '86 951 from Keith's father), and he is one sharp cookie.

Give me a holler when you get here and I'll be glad to show you around.

Welcome to Charlotte. I'm an ex-New Yorker who moved here back in '93.
I live just outside Charlotte in a small town called Weddington.
I haven't needed any service on my 944 yet but I've also heard good things about Euroworks.
Good luck on your move.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses!

Looks like the unanimous decision is Eurowerks - I'll make sure to give them a call upon my arrival.

My girlfriend and I went to Charlotte in February since I knew that my company was planning on relocating many people down there. We checked it out and liked it so I am looking forward to the change.

I know Charlotte is not New York but I'm glad it isn't. I'm not a native New Yorker (well I was actually born here but never lived here till about 5 years ago) and with my father being in the military we moved quite a bit. Smaller cities is more what I'm used to. I will miss all of the conveniences and of course the night life! But I'm looking forward to the better weather (more top-down driving) and more of a selection of outdoor activities.

Anyway I'll get in touch with all of you as the time gets closer. I believe they want me down there and at work by the first week of July.

I moved out of Charlotte about 8 years back to a town outside of Winston Salem with less than 6k residents. Even having grown up in Charlotte, I don't regret the move one bit, less traffic, lower taxes, cheaper car insurance, great twisty roads, good scenery and I can scoot into Winston or Greensboro for anything I need. Even so, you'll find most anything you could ever want in Charlotte, it is the largest city in NC. The university area is a good area. You'll also find that from Charlotte, you're just a few hours from Myrtle Beach or the Smokey Mountain in the other direction. There are also several ski resorts within a couple hours drive. Charlotte has a good central location for air or car travel.

When you come into town, take the time to make Jim's acquaintance, you'll be glad you did. Jim and Keith are both Rennlisters and very competent wrenches. To put it simply, if Jim says it, I trust it. He's been a Porsche wrench for a very long time, and a trustworty person too.

Welcome to the area, if your local PCA doesn't do stuff that interests you, we set up drives and events outside of PCA. When you go to visit Jim and Keith, ask Keith about the NRPCA.
