Default Buying Oil

I'm at the minimum oil mark, or thereabouts and so I think I'm going to get some oil and top it up.

Any brand recommendations?

mobil-1 synthetic . . . if you don't want to spend the extra on synthetic, try the mobil synthetic blend (a mix of synthetic and conventional oil)

Umm...
It's harmless to mix conventional and synthetic, hence the creation of synthetic blends. All the stories about that are urban legends.
Now, synthetic MAY cause some extra leakage, but really that is quite rare. Usually people switch to a lighter weight oil when they switch to synthetic, and that's what actually causes the leaks.

I mix grades all the time. Especially when it's getting closer to winter, I start topping off with a lighter weight oil.
It's really quite harmless.

Since you're a fellow canadian, and we just FINALLY got near summer, I would say top it off with Mobil 1 15w50, or Amsoil 20W50,or something heavy like that. But that's just a personal preference.

I have no idea what is in it right now, because I haven't had the car long enough to change the oil. Not sure what the PO put in.

Anyways, thanks for the advice guys. Another reason for me to consider Rennlist membership sooner rather then later.

well, what do you think of your PO. does it seem like he woudlve spent extra for good synthetic oil? I wouldn't worry too much either way. its about a quart (on most cars) between minimum and maximum, that much shouldnt affect much. but do an oil change soon to be safe.

If you're down a quart, you're probably due for a change. That way you'll know what's in it so you can use the same stuff if you need to top up later.

But my car has Castrol GTX in it. I buy it in cases and never mix brands, viscosities, or types of oil. Guess I'm a traditionalist.

IMHO, the first thing you should do when you first get the car is an oil change. Who knows when it was last done and with what product.

I use Mahle filters and Mobil 1 15W-50.

Ditto on the Mahle filters and mobil 1 15W-50. I would also agree the first thing you should do is change that unknown oil...

Later!

Well I have records of when it was changed last... it's been ~3000km since the last oil change, which was in late august. I have no idea of what oil was used though.

I'll be changing the oil in April/May anyways, but I just wanted to play it safe and top up the oil in the meantime.

Why wait? It takes $20 and 20 minutes to change the oil, and your current oil is 7 mos old. It's irrelevant that it only has been 3000km, age is a determining factor also.
