try the classifieds.... oh wait you have to be a member.

i'd suspect valve seals before rings. on the other hand you say its a beater and you dont know the previous history of the engine, so it could be rings as well. i say just drive it.

Do a compression test and/or leakdown.

Easy way to tell.
When does it smoke?
A little on startup - valve seals
on acceleration/deceleration - rings.

I have an 87 S with 123,000 and I am getting black smoke under heavy acceleration. It has been suggeted that it is the fuel preasure regulator and I am running super rich. Now when the car does smoke, I can tell as the engine almost seems to knock under load. Also in cold weather say under 40 degrees. the car pulls MUCH stronger. Hence the belief that the fuel preesure regulator is bad. Uhhh ohhh leaking rings is bad....

Ah yes... I should have asked what color the smoke is.

I was talking about blue/grey smoke from oil.
If it's black, then you're getting too much fuel. Could be DME temp sensor, or FPR, or a couple other things...

I have the same car that did the same thing, my rear bumper was black! The FPR was bad and I was running about 55 psi on the fuel, should be about 32.

Kenny, what weight oil are you running? Thicker may help or try adding Lucas oil additive. If it smokes while driving it doesn't sound like seals though.

blue smoke? how much oil do you go through?

ok try this.. drain your synthetic, and put in marvel mystery oil for a couple hundred miles. sometimes thats been known to help with rings and other stuff, and get things to seal back up. if marvel mystery oil dosent do anything.. youre ****ed.

i did mine a while back and its really not that hard of a task.....if i remember right. i'd say go for it and have a little fun with it! sorry i don't have more details on the exact DIY but my car is back home so i don't have a reference right now and i would hate to stear you in the wrong direction. there should be a DIY around somewhere though.

It's pretty easy, I did mine in under 30 minutes while holding a flashlight with my shoulder. You'll likely have to raise the rear of the fuel rail to get to the bottom bolt.

Maybe one beer if you stretch it out.
