My S2 was starting to make a really bad clanking noise over the weekend. I took it to German Motor Tech and they called this AM with bad news. Said the water pump was shot "Has a lot of play in it?" and the front oil seals need redone. Said that means I need new thermostat/rollers/tensioners/timing belt - all adds up to $1500!! I told him I couldn't spend that on the car - and that I would have it towed home. Any comments advice?? This car has well over 200,000 miles on it, needs a paint job/interior work/has a slight collant leak/windshield crack/bad ac. If I could get $3000 out of parts I'd be alright on the car. If I could figure out how to fix it reasonably that would work too - but as it is a daily driver it would be great if I could fix it up quickly.

If you are mechanically inclined, you can do the work to get it running again (belts, seals, pump, rollers) for about 1/3 of the quoted price. 944Pete just did all of that work in the span of 2 evenings, maybe he can better answer to this as far as his experience. I'd hate to see you part it. If you like it, it really is cheaper to repair it (even if you have to pay the mech and/or work something out with him) than to have to find another reliable used car. IMHO.

Sorry to hear the news! I think that type of work is definitely worth it on an S2. It sounds like youd also be willing to sell to sell it also for $3,000, is that right??
I'd be seriously interested at that price![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Well - I am have done a little wrench turning on the car - front brakes/control arm/radiator thermostat and lots of interior work. I've never tackled anything on the engine though.

This Porsche is a keeper (no matter what happened to the motor)
These are Porsche's you part out:
Do you see a difference? GOOD!! So buy some tools and get to work!

Josh, don't part it out. There are plenty of listers in Atl. that would surely give you a hand. The belts, W-pump, and front seals can all be done at the same time. $1500 is average for the shop rate but if you do the work yourself you'll probably be spending sround $400 on parts. If you get some help from someone doing it your self may take about a few hours, its not that difficult a job. I wouldn't even consider it being engine work, it's all external. Just as hard as any of the work you've said you've already done on the car.

Ds - the "S" you might part. What shape is it in?

Not to hijack your thread but in reply to Hacker-Pschorr. The car runs great. It has a fresh head rebuilt with around 8K miles on it. The problem is the frame damge to the front clip.It isn't that bad but very noticeable. The interior is in very good condition also, no dash cracks and a seperation of a seam on the drivers seat, but all in all good condition. I have all the body panels to put on the car(except for the windshield), I just dont have the time for this project. I have to get my S2 running first and out of the garage then I'll decide on what to do with the S but most likely I'll part it and get another one. Pretty hypocritical, me telling Josh not to part yet I'm toying with the idea myself.

Well - If it is a easy as Dsalillas says I sure would like to go that route. I guess that 944 Pete is the guy to talk to about what parts to order? I have a receipt from where Performance Imports in Doraville did this same job minus the oil seals on this car about 30,000 miles ago. Hard to say exactly as that is the milage I have extrapolated given the broken odometer.
It lists out
944 106 021 YX Water Pump - $130
944 106 129 05 Termostat - $9.54
944 102 277 06 Belt Tensioner - $33.30
944 105 241 02 Tension Roller - $35.70
944 105 241 03 Tension Roller - $33.30
944 102 025 07 Balance Shaft - $31.13
944 102 219 04 Toothed Belt - $41.70
944 105 323 02 Timinig Belt - $36.70
944 105 631 10 Tensioner Roller - $89.95 (2)
999 707 283 40 Rubber O ring - $2.93
999 192 299 50 Fan Belt K6X10000 - $18.30
999 192 241 50 Fan Belt 10X950 - $11.60
And that totals up to $564.05 on 10/28/00 - Are there really 4 tension rollers total?

I got a kit that had the belts and 4 tensioner/rollers for around $180. You'll have to ask for the kit since it's not listed. The place I got them is in Atlanta here is the site Porsche parts . The customer service is pretty good and they sent me the parts in one day. Since you live over there you can just pick them up. You could probably get all your parts there since they'll beat any advertised price.

The water pump price looks good. You could get a better deal on the rollers and belts from Zim's or Vertex. I think Vertex sell the belt & rollers as a package for around $180.00. You'll need the front seal kit, too. I got mine from Pelican Parts for around $75.00. I searched around and that was the best deal. Tools that you'll need are a gear puller, a 3 foot breaker bar, cheesehead sockets, a flywheel lock, and a belt tensioning gauge (9021 or Kricket, etc.)
The best write up on the procedures are at www.clarks-garage.com
It's not as hard as it sounds. Don't part the car, get ahold of Brian Perry (Perry 951). He just moved to Atlanta and I can almost guarantee he would help you do all the work. He's a really good guy.
