Any ideas where it came from?

The battery tray had a little surface rust that I thought that I took care of (not bad at all).

Anyone have a good procedure to get rid of it before it causes real damage? I suppose my next move is going to be to take the carpet up and the pass. seat to see if it's anywhere else. Perhaps the car's been in water in the past, it is New Orleans.

My guerss is that you had some water mixed with some battery acid condensate leak into there. Water alone shouldn't cause that due to the galvanized body structure. Mix a little acid though, and you see what happens. Your going to need to find out why water entered there and fix that first. Depending on the depth of that corrosion, you may just arrest it with one of the rust converters. Otherwise it's going to be difficult to prep that area for new primer and paint.

www.por15.com

by the way.. thats not rust thats just a little crud

ok being serious now..

all rust is serious. the key is to deal with it now, and not later, when it goes from serious to rot.

sand down to clean metal. use some 60 grit paper, take that stuff right off (including any paint!). when down to clean metal, do the full por 15 treatment, buy their start up kit, it has everything, and will cover enough space for that spot. when done, get new bolts or washers. eliminate all rust.. and all rusty screws/washers. it spreads like a virus and no part is immune.
