Default How many miles out of a tank 'til the light comes on?

Hi Guys,
I am a bit concerned that my '86 n/a has a drinking problem. Last time I got about 340miles 'til the light came on. To be more accurate, that was 72 litres during mainly city driving. Is that excessive?

Cheers,
Alex

Not too bad, I'd say. These cars consume considerably more in city driving. Try 200 miles in the early cars with the smaller tank (~50 liter).

I get 310-330 from 84 before the light comes on. Then I add 13-14 gallons.
This is mixed hwy city driving.

I've gone around 400 without my light turning on before...it makes me think that my light doesn't work. I do a mix of city and highway driving and usualy end up putting 18-19 gallons after that.

if you're putting in 19 gallons, and your light did not come on - it (the light) is more than likely not working properly.

I've put about 650 miles on a tank (from full until I filled it). I never actually hit the light though, but I just got nervous and decided to fill it anyways. Now that I think of it, I've never seen the light come on before....anyway to check if it's working?

Don't feel bad... Right now I am getting about 100 or less miles per tank. I am running in open-loop mode though and haven't gone to a dino to "fine tune."

I usually get around 450 miles from a full tank, which involves a lot of motorway or rural driving. Over 500 should be possible without too much trouble.

When I use it daily, I get an average of around 30mpg. That's a UK gallon (4.45 liters)

Wow, I got 330 miles on my first tank (18 gal.)--I need to stay off the loud pedal!

I saw an earlier thread about changing an old 'n busted O2 sensor as a good way to get better milage, are there any other bad-milage culprits I should look into?

In my case cleaning the throttle body helped substantially, but that was just because mine was dirty.

Another thing to look for is any and all vaccum leaks, these would hinder fuel mileage. Also new spark plugs would help this too.

Methinks it's time to replace the O2 sensor in the 83. Thanks for the data point. Coming from Europe where fuel is $4/gallon, I didn't make much of my low mileage until now. Thanks.

There's a light?

Kidding aside, I never knew there was one. Should it come on - at least as a test - when you turn the key past the first detent? How would I know if it works/how do you fix it if it doesn't? How can you get at the bulb? Anyone know?

Well, the bulb is not on the back of the cluster, it's internal. Maybe if you remove the temp/gas gauge you can access it, maybe... If you've read the procedures on www.clarks-garage.com to check the gauge reading by disconnecting the sender and connecting a known resistor, it leaves out one pin on the plug. If you connect that pin to one of the other 2, can't remember if it's ground or 12v, the light comes on. I'm currently in the process of getting mine to work.
