Default What is this hose on engine?? [1990 944 S2]

Can someone tell me what this hose is? My concern is that mine has a kind of sharp bend in it where is routes down and though the aluminum intake manifold. It appears that from age and heat it has collapse and almost pinched. I'm concerned that whatever flows through there could be, or will eventually be affected. Right now it runs great, but it sure doesn't look like a good situation.

I would just replace it, and may have to, but it looks the bottom end of end will be hard to access, since I really can't even see where it ends.

Coolant heating for the throttle body. Looks like you have the front exit for it gone/blocked off.

on the 968, the outer two are the anti-icing coolant passages and the center is to the AOS.

I believe that is that is the crankcase vent to throttle body hose on an S2. This hose allows the "oily air" that vents from the crankcase to be re-ingested by the engine and burned. This is very pricey hose, and some people run a hose from the under-intake manifold source to a catch-can, and from the catch can to the throttle body. The theory being that this oily air can be cleaned by the catch can and not go back into the throttle body and intake manifold and make it all black and oily inside. If this hoe is pinched you could build up excess crankcase pressure, but not likely, and it it left open it will simply spew some oily air onto the engine.

Having bought this kit: https://www.lindseyracing.com/LR/Par...HOSE944S2.html I also believe that it is not part of the cooling system. Which was a concern as removing the intake seems like a pain. If you do remove it, and would be so kind as to document that process, I would love to follow in your footsteps for the intake removal, as I have a knock sensor that I need to replace.

Good luck

Well continuing in this area, notice to the right of that breather hose how there’s another hose that’s clamped off. Is this a factory clamp off job or has someone been monkeying with my car?

I can get you a picture later today but I'm pretty sure that's supposed to go somewhere.

that should go to a join in the hose which goes from the coolant tank to the water pump

So... That means water would flow in (or out) from this port, which means there would be another port for the water to move through to get out of there.

Aussie is right, this is part of the throttle body heater circuit. I think he is right that this is the outflow hose that goes to the coolant tank. I am at work now, but will try to get photos of where the inbound line comes from and what the outbound line goes to from my S2 cabrio. Depending on your climate, I am not sure that this will affect your vehicles operation.

And yes, someone has been monkeying with your car. I LOVE finding all those little things a PO did (my favorite has been tack welding a seat to the floor pan- I suppose it worked). But what is really scary is what a PO didnt't do!!

Here's some pictures from my somewhat disheveled car.

Here's the hose that looks like it's been cut off on your car, or capped:

Runs over to the T that come off the coolant reservoir

Here's another view of the tee:

Please ignore the mess.

From the tee, it runs over to the left in the picture along the headlight connector assembly thing to this part of the engine, under the distributor:

I plan on replacing all these hoses with the Lindsey set so if you want my old ones you would be welcome to them. They don't leak, but they're potentially also original.

Cheers

Thanks for all your feedbacks. After reading all the comments and reviewing the photos, I now see the setup I have... Someone cut and plugged #1 and #2 in the photo, and they connected the hose ends to each other so that the water can still flow, just not through the throttle/intake components.

Living in the deep South of USA (Alabama) I doubt I actually need that throttle warming behavior of the original design, so I don’t know if someone altered the set up for any strategic reason, or if they were perhaps having leaks, but I really don’t see any evidence of that.

Nonetheless, I’m glad the mystery is solved but I am not compelled to restore it back to original condition at this time.
