Default Just bought a 944 Turbo! Need Advice!

Hey guys I just picked up a 1986 944 Turbo off Ebay I ran the carfax and talked to the PO for awhile so It seems like it will be a fun car. I plan on doing the Timing belt and a tune-up as soon as I get it home next week. Does anyone have links to a good write up on the TB procedure? Also Where should I go for parts and can someone let me know everything I should get so I can do it in one shot.. I'll get some pics as soon as I get it home and appriciate any info and advice you guys can send me i.e. Must do mods etc....

Thanks!!

Zack

Good luck, I hope you did not buy your self more of a headache then needed. Turbos are a little harder and more $$$ to work on then N/A's when stuff goes wrong. But on the brite side if its just the body work u got a good deal.

Check out www.clarks-garage.com

Clark has written up a virtual shop manual, including belt replacement.

Essential mods? A set of performance chips are a virtual necessity. You will never pick up more power for less money in the auto world. It can snowball from there to test pipes, boost controller, MAF kit, bigger turbo, bigger injectors, upgraded wastegate, etc., etc., etc.

As for one-stop suppliers, only the dealer sells everything, but places like www.944online.com and paragon products have all the typical things you will need. Check out the rennlist sponsor page.

I recommend the Guru software.

That being said, I would really examine the condition of that car before trying up the boost/HP. A car with damage like that one, doesnt usually have the worlds best maintenance. Did you get any history/receipts with the car?

car does look like it was run hard.....lots of maintainence items to be accounted for besides belt job. Even low mileage damage free cars have issues. My car only has 80k on it and I have replaced or have on the list to replace just due to age:
shocks/struts
rotors and pads
cv's
wheel bearings
etc,etc,etc........the list never ends
it can add up in a hurry, just take your time and plan a couple of projects a month or whatever your $$ will allow. Like Matt said, get it right with regular maintainence items first before you start the mods, you'll be much more pleased in the long run.

Yep, bring her up to optimum specs first, then go for mods.
I've managed to convince myself that it is the way to go (which it is).

Congrats on the new purchase and welcome to Rennlist!

I convinced myself that was the way to go too. 9K later I am almost done. Seriously, do it once, do it right.

Bones944 -

I'd have to agree with you, it looks like that car was beat to hell. No offense Zack.

I have to wonder if $4500 was a fair price - I'm not too well versed when it comes to Turbo values. I just figure it this way: If it looks like it wasn't taken care of outwardly (i.e. damaged body & severly worn interior), then you can probably bet that the PO had no regard for maintenace or general care.

Plus - no VIN to run a CarFax - he could be hiding some serious issues (salvage title, odo fraud, etc). Maybe he's not hiding anything - it could be straight from the auction with no history.

Just be carful Zack - negative feedback on eBay sucks, but having a 944T that needs $1000s just to get it back to par sucks even more.
