Talking Fantasy M44 engine

Just for fun, I was fantasising about what would be necessary to get the most bang for the buck on a normally aspirated 3.0 (or more) M44 engine for road and track.

What could be achieved with the following budgets?

$10k

$20k

$30k

So, the rules are:
1. "M44 Engine" - what does this mean? Block, pistons, rods, crankshaft?
2. Normally aspirated.
3. Budget cap.
4. "Road and track" - pump gas?

Call Michael Mount and open your check book wide.

Check these out for inspiration.

Dry sump, real camshafts, a real ECU, and an improved intake/exhaust will take you a long way with an S2/968 engine.

You could build one hell of a fun Mustang or Camaro for that money, and not cry so much when it explodes and/or crashes.

Within your top budget, you could purchase a kick a** car. check his for sale post. Also follow his build thread, search his name, well worth your time.

Umm for this budget could we get a cylinder head with electronic solenoids instead of bump-sticks?

I'm with V2Rocket, the Michael Mount 400 verified hp engine is probably the definitive answer to your question for the $30K budget, drop the mic. No need to fantisize, it's real!

I see that no one wants to play

Of course, a Mustang, a Camaro or a 951 are more sensible propositions. But the game was about speculating about how far 10, 20 or 30k lead you on a normally aspirated M44!

Yesterday I saw a post of a pretty impressive Honda K-series engine build for 17k and that made me think about how much more expensive it would be to tune a Porsche M44 engine to a similar level. I'm aware that much more but how much?

Thank you very much. They are impressive and inspiring. It would be nice to have a dollar figure on each of those modifications.

For engines that are frequently tuned, such as Honda K-series, there are so many off-the-shelf parts and kits so one can get an idea of the cost of a build (I guess it's the same on American engines: LS3, etc.).

WPOZZZ,
Yeah I know what you mean. I was at an autocross with a n/a Honda S2000 that was built... just an autocross monster, probably faster than many forced induction cars on that course.
After about 7,000 USD, you are better off converting to forced induction. Particularly torque is unmatched with n/a. If you do your own work that is. With n/a - you have to be a mad genius like Michael Mount.

I like what those Aussie time attack guys did with the billet 3.0 liter block. But budget is probably more like $100k.

Euro, so even more expensive, but it turns out that's actually the price for the whole engine not the block.

I've been following that Aussie 968 with interest but it's a very extreme build both in terms of budget and purpose!
