I've used similar stands for years and I have heard of people accidentally popping the release lever while under load, and of course if there is a shift or imbalance in the load that can be a lot easier.
I've thought about adding a strap to hold the pawl down when in place. I do not think it'd take a lot to make it more secure, even a velcro strap would probably do it.

How the heck is the pawl moving when there is so much weight on them? They said it's disengaging with a shift in weight, so are the teeth too narrow and there is not enough bite?
Hey Jfrahm, be careful

Thanks for posting this. I used these under my sons F250 front while re-doing the front suspension. Could have been a bad result. We did have the hydraulic jack under there at the time as a backup, but these won't get used again!

Good post, terrible jack stands!

See the yellow banner "Announcement" at the top of the forum.... Maybe we have to do something to make those more noticeable... In the meantime, check out ESCO jack stands. By far my favorite and the most confidence-inspiring stands I've found.

For years now I’ve wondered about how failsafe pawl style jack stands are. Here’s the answer.
About a year ago I started to transition to pin-style stands like the ESCOs.
I think I will be permanently retiring my two remaining pawl style stands.

I have these (set of four) as well as a set of older style through-pin stands. I had six pawl style stands kicking around, but I have since gotten rid of them, as I don't trust them, but they are more convenient to adjust. Just not worth the extra risk, small as it may be IMO.

Those look like the Torin Big Reds I have. I like the safety of the pin, but was not a fan of the small base. Once I saw the ESCO's, I have literally never used anything else....
