Default wheels ?offset? wheels on e(vil)-bay

what does it mean when a wheel says it is ET21, or ET18?

(i can't remember the actualy numbers, but i'm sure it said ET_ _ )

thanx for any replies.

BTW: i realize the ? is a bit vague. when i have more time i'll search for the wheels i was looking at again.

Ok, the #s are ET11 and ET23. The bid has gone up $500 since last night!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, there is another set. It says they are the offset for the 930 and for 911s 78'-94' Is this correct? I've always been told that I could put any wheels on my car up to an 89' 911?!

That's the offset in milimeters. the distance from the center of the wheel to the mounting surface. early offset is 23mm, the mounting surface is 23mm from the center of the wheel. Late offset is 53mm, Porsche moved the mounting surface out 30mm to make room for ABS.

Oops! good timing.
Sounds like the right offsets for a widebody 911 (pre-964), my Fuchs (16x7&8" with 911 part numbers) are ET23.3 front and ET10.3 rear.

Which car did you want to put them on?

there's the links: I'm ordering about a thousand dollars in KONIs and springs, etc today so I seriously doubt i could put money into wheels too!

EDIT: they are just unbelievably tempting right before our AutoX season is gonna start

I had no problem, they fit better than the stock offset. The 85.5-86 cars didn't have the 21mm spacer that the 83-85.1 cars got so the 10.3 offset filled the gap that I would have had anyway. Your car should have those spacers and you will probably need to remove them.

Actually, regarding LATE model 944's:
Offset on the stock REAR wheels is 52.3mm
Offset on the stock FRONT wheels is 55mm

However, you can put the rear wheels (52.3mm) no the front without any rubbing issues, and without the need to use spacers.

Just clarifying, due to my **** retentive nature! (C'mon Dave, you should know all this stuff!! Of course, I'm not sure what the proper offset is on an AMW touched car! )

Actually, Porsche played around ALOT with different offsets on the later cars. Offset is also dependant on wheel width so a car running 8" all around might not be able to use the same offset as 7" or 9".

Zoltan, reduce your front track by 5mm and maybe you won't be quite so Slow2!

Dave, AFAIK, only the 944 Turbo S had a different offset (65mm front, dunno about the rears).

Regarding reducing my track: sure, I reduce my track by 5mm, but I also increase my contact patch by 40mm! (Biggest tire on a 7Jx16 is a 225. You can fit a 245 on an 8Jx16) I'll take that reduction in track vs. increased contact any day!

And watchit about the slow comments! Them's fighting words!

-Z-man.

PS: Yeah, I know, I started it....

Track change is from extra offset! IIRC not all wheels were made in 55mm offset so those styles use the same offset all around.

Extra wheel width also increases track, so technically your 15mm wider but I let that slide since it's a product of the contact patch. Incidently, the contact area doesn't change size with the wider tire, it only changes shape if you run the same tire pressure (don't forget that the contact patch shrinks when tire pressure is increased).

I wonder if it's the extra rolling resistance that's slowing you down?!?

I've got 911 16x7 and 16x8 Fuchs on my 86. I like the deep dish look of the 911 16x8s on the rear.

Zman: Are you saying that if I chose to, I could run say D90s 16x8s on the front without spacers?
