Default I need help with a wierd 944..

Hi!

I've found this 1989 N/A with an auto gearbox.. I'm helping a friend find a 944 auto since he can't drive stick.

The seller says that it was sold new in Japan and bought by his uncle while he worked there.. It's a 1989 year model and is supposed to have the S2 engine and an auto-box.. I find it a bit wierd but it could be interesting..

Anyway, the VIN is "WPOZZZ94ZKN403895" and if any of you guys know what the parts after ZZZ means could you enlighten me since I can't find any info about it. I suspect that the 94Z means that it's a 944 model and ZZZ is ROW while WP0 is Porsche.

Does anyone know what KN403895 means?

TIA!!

Anyone know anything? Im curious too. I was almost positive that no S2 cars ever left the factory with an automatic. Same for the Turbo models.

I would have thought that the 'K' designates a 1990 model. My 84 vin is designated ...942EN462688 therefore if E=84, F=85 etc.... K would =1990.

I couldn't drive stick when I bought my 951. It's worth it to learn

K is an 89 because I is not included in the VIN coding. F = 85, G = 86 H = 87 J = 88 K = 89. The last 6 numbers are the serial numbers.

Ok, so if it is an 89 it should have an S2 engine right?

It could be a 2.7l 8 valve, they were available with the automatic in '89. Any underhood pic should solve the problem as it's easy to tell the 16v valve cover from the 8v cam tower.

I ran the VIN through Carfax, but it says it's invalid. No help there.

Ken, I don't know if you caught it but that "WPO" should be "WP0" IIRC.

WP0=Porsche
ZZZ=ROW
94=first 2 digits of type (944)
Z="test digit"
K=1989
N=Neckarsulm (factory)
4=last digit of type (944)
03895=serial number

Thats because CARFAX only does North American cars. I think.

Any pictures of this thing?

According to the 944 FAQ, 1989 8 valve 2.7 L cars started with serial # KN450001. 1989 944 S2s started with serial number KN480001. I don't see anything listed that starts with KN40nnnn.

Good point about N. American cars and carfax, Marc! That could be it.
I think the serian numbers Don is quoting might also be for N. American cars.
