Lifter compatibility ?
Anyone ever tried the INA lifter 420 0022 100 This lifter can be bought for $5-7 each vs the INA 420 0010 100 which is the specified lifter for the 944/968 at $20-25 each. I have been told that the VW/Audi lifter can be used as a replacement in the 944/968. Anyone have any info to share on this part swap ?? Im probably putting in a set of used cams and thought I should replace the lifters with the used cams.

Well, $325 difference for quite possibly the same thing is a lot of money to me. Add to the fact that this refresh on my 968 needed for me to purchase a set of used cams or get mine re-sprocketed ($325 each) and its all adding up to nearly 3k to fix a bad head gasket and do new water pump, rollers, belt, chain & pads, tensioner, valve/job head refresh, seals and the list goes on..... Not complaining as you know when you purchase an older 968 that there are typically some deferred maintenance items but I think when I found 4 teeth broken off the exhaust cam it put me over the edge!
I wrote INA an email looking for all the tech specs on both part numbers. We will see if that materializes into anything?

everyone be advised that the VW lifters in discussion only work for the DOHC 944 engines (944S and 944S2 and 968).
These are the wrong size and will not work in a SOHC engine like base 944 or 944 turbo.

Not even if you wrap them with aluminum tape so they'll fit in the bores good & snug?

On a serious note, I wonder if you could machine sleeves to fit in the cam housing so you could use a more standard off the shelf part? That is, as long as something with right length could be found. The 2V lifters were always a poor choice I always thought. They're huge (heavy) for something that's supposed to be a high-performance design (don't laugh)...It'd also be cool if 'someone' came up with a lifter that perhaps had a titanium body for light weight and high strength, but with a pressed-on steel face for cam lobe compatibility.

I suggested just that to the 928 guys (they use the same SOHC lifters) and it's certainly doable but this one machinist thinks he found a slightly larger Mercedes lifter that might work but don't know what happened to that.
A 1.5mm thickness sleeve secured in place somehow would work, I think.
Alternatively Lindsey Racing makes solid lifters for SOHC if you're into pulling the cam off for lash adjustments.

I wonder if oil groove on both sides lifter and head, causes any hydraulic disturbance. I would think it does.
Maybe internal part aka 'button' from these VW ina lifters fit in porsche liftter housings..

Is there a alternate source for the SOHC lifters similar to what appears to be for the DOHC engines?
