Default getting an early 924-carfax anyone? and advise.

i was passing through a neighborhood on the way to drop my g/f off today and ran across an 82 924 sitting in someones backyard, all i could tell from the street was it was brown. After work today i stopped and inquired about it and found that it could be bought for 300 cash!!! Since my g/f had been saying she always wanted a 924 and this being a project, we jumped at the chance... i figure at least if its a bust i can make my money back. Tomorrow im sending a tow truck to pick up the beast, but before then, can anyone do a car fax on this vin?

WPOAAO924CN450327

the car is in florence ky.- it has the audi 2.0 n/a and the four lug wheels and the five speed trans. The interior is pretty much shot but the body and mechanicals seem to be in relatively good shape. It looks as though someone has replaced the fuel distributor and possibly the fuel pump, but i couldnt start it since the owner lost the keys and has partially taken it apart ie/ door panel, door handle, rear bumper and some misc. stuff, why i have no idea. The plan for the car is to get it into running order, do a quick overall paintjob, and make it tough enough for some fun autox action over this summer for the g/f- not necessarily need to be competitive.

1.will my turbo springs that came on my 89 n/a w/ sport suspension fit on the 82? since they have a tougher spring rate? 162 vs. 120??130???

2. will the seats from an 87 i have fit the 82???

3. does anyone have a rear bumper for an 82-?? 924 fs semi cheap since this one is broken?

4. It has 81,000 miles on it, if it runs decent, how long can it last w/ good maintenance and what do i need to replace, is it like the 944 w/ timing belts etc..sorry i didnt search too much but its late and ill be checking this at work tomorrow....TIA

anything else i need to know? dan.

OT - There's a guy down the street from me who has what I believe to be a 1979 924 Turbo.

He's thinking about setting it up for drag racing.

xsboost90:

1) I don't believe your turbo springs will fit. The 82 924 should have the same struts as the 83-85 944. I wouln't replace the springs anyway, at least not unless you get stiffer torsion bars. Also, the 924's use a softer spring than the 944, and I believe especially the 85.5+ 944's.

2) The 87' seats should fit, however you may find spacers between the seat bracket and the seat frame; you'll want to remove them to lower the seat and buy you some more leg room, (or maybe it's the other way around, just can't remember).

3) Sorry, I'm no help here.

4) Is it 81k, or is it 181K? 81k isn't a lot of milage. 81k is not a lot of milage, and the basic engine will go for a long time with maintenence. I pulled the head off of mine at 120k and it looked good.

The timing belt is not as critical as the 944, in terms of tension; however, you should always use a tension tool on all belts, your parts will last longer, as will your belt. It's also easy to do.

The engines tend to run hot and bake the hoses and spark plug wires. Be sure to replace any suspect piece to avoid difficult to diagnose issues. Also make sure the intake boots are in good shape, and fitter properly. This is where a lot of air leaks make themselves present.

I'd replace, or have rebuilt the brake master cylinder, and the rear wheel cylinders. They may work when your first drive it, but you'll find the aged seals will suddenly fail at the wrong moment.

I'd take a key tumbler assembly to a locksmith and have him make a key. It will be cheaper than a new lockset. Or perhaps you can get a complete set off of an early 944.

Thats all I can think of for now. Good luck.

Regards,
Abdul

Also, the 924 engine (the Audi 2.0) is a non-interference engine, so if the timing belt snaps, no prob. go buy a new one, slap it on, and you're good to go. for more information, go to www.924board.org it's similar to Rennlist as it's a free discussion board, but not nearly as popular, there are some Guru's there. Look for Vince Ponz, Lizard, or 924 RACR. they know the most (IMHO) about the cars on the board.
