Hey everyone about to put a 951 on my 944S but I would like to not use the aluminum bar and possibly bumper shocks if possible. I was wondering if anyone has done the same and wanted to see other setups? Reason is essentially to cut some weight down, granted I know it makes it more fragile to impacts. I considered a tubular bar mounted on the bumper shocks as an idea.
The aluminum bar weighs nearly nothing.
And the top bar holds up the plastic bumper cover.
So i guess you could cut off the bottom bar but for 2lbs or so seems like a lot of work
Removed the bumper and shocks on my track car, 'bout 20 years ago now, so I forgot how I attached the bumper skin/nose panel back on.
Re-animating the car now.... and putting the bumper back on.
I'll be racing it with NASA, and 'stuff' happens at the track.
Lol true, but 30+ year old sports car without airbags I don’t think an aluminum bar and 5mph impact shocks are going to help me much. But, I’ve been wrong before 🤔

Safety aside, you're foolish to add weight when you don't have to. Most people try to make their car weigh less.
Don't underestimate the amount of body damage that will result from a 5mph crash without the bumper guts.
It adds a few pounds, and totally in the wrong place. I took it out for timetrialing, but I won't do any wheel to wheel racing without it.

I’ve also already pulled items to cut weight in other areas.
I think Van was simply answering your question and agreeing that you shouldn’t use the aluminum bar and bumper shocks as they add weight and that would be foolish on a race car. That’s how I read his post and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t run the stock bar and shocks on his race cars and btw I don’t either on mine.

Ok thats what I thought at first but more I read it I may have assumed it the other way. So if thats the case I apologize Van and will remove the reply.

I can understand that, I don’t have the aluminum bar currently and if it’s light enough I would run it. I remember the spread sheet for weight reduction listed the front and rear bumpers rather heavy so I wanted to strip out some weight if possible but could have been for an NA which the metal bumper may be heavier vs the aluminum bar in the 951/S2. If the aluminum bar is only a few pounds then even with a tube support there wouldn’t be really any gain. Tube may do better in impact due to the design as the energy spreads differently and more evenly.
Also just to be clear this isn’t a daily driver car, it will get some street use but it will be more for autocross and occasional street driving. So I have a few other daily drivers at my disposal.
Gotcha may just get one and run it then if it’s that minimal. Removing the cruise control, washer tank and maybe the coolant res or fit a smaller one. I would like to ditch the pop-ups and have considered making bi-xeon projectors to go where the foglights are or use the vt951 manual pop-up bracket.
Really like this car and probably going to take a similar direction.

Also if you drill the top and bottom of that bar you can half the weight of it without significantly affecting its purpose. I can be dangerous with a 2in hole saw bit and a drill
