Default Cruise control brain - any known rebuilders?

My cruise brain is bad (checked servo, it is fine). From what I can tell looking at solder joints on board through magnifying glass, they all look OK. I know that Ian at 944online used to do rebuild/exchange of brains, but I spoke with them last week and they no longer do that. Is anyone aware of other sources for rebuilt cruise brains?

Smile cruise control brain

You might check out Computer Docs down in Florida. Might be cheaper to get a whole used unit out of LA autoparts..Also might have a used one in RetroAuto out of Claremont NH.866-737-1733. Jus sayin.

I'm not familiar with the 944 unit but I successfully reflowed the solder on my 928 brain in the oven. As far as I know it is still working 6 years later. It's worth a try if you are tossing the old unit anyway.

928sRUS has a rebuilder for 928 cruise control units. You could contact them and see if they can do yours.

Yes...on the other Porsche forum! But first tell me what you did to confirm the servo was ok. I’m still struggling to get my to respond at all.

Mine is currently with www.cruisecontrolrepair.com a guy on the Mercedes forums. He has a diagnostic section for the actuator on the site. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I spent about 3 hours and reflowed every joint on the circuit board and, Viola! it started working again.

You have a bad solder joint somewhere, you just have to find it.

What Van said. Cheapest first option.
We had an issue with a friends cruise unit, resoldered every single joint, even though they all looked fine, and hey presto all good !

That is certainly the first, least cost option. However, I don't believe my soldering skills are quite good enough for that many tiny connections. So I am subbing this job out, and am focusing my time on fixing fuel supply issue and redoing power steering rack (again) due to reman rack which was rebuilt incorrectly. Only so many hours in a day. Will report back on resolution from rebuilder. When the brain from my 944 was reflowed, it worked for about 18 months, then quit again.

$8 hobby kit soldering/woodburning pen with various tips and blades is your tool of choice, from Harbor Freight. Use a magnifying glass/light and a painter's stick to steady your hand. YouTube probably has videos on this procedure for DMEs. etc.

Ya I would try a resolder first either with your hands and a soldering iron or the oven method of baking it for a few min. Iron would be preferred.

Got my unit back & happy to say cruise control works perfect now! One thing I discovered is the pin out on the website for testing the actuator motor is for a Mercedes. The pins are different for Porsche.

Nice to know. Mine is with 928srus.com right now. Will check with them in the next day or so to see what the status is. More concerned about getting power steering redone right now, among other projects. Have a third rack on its way to me right now. First was rebuilt incorrectly, second was wrong rack for a 968, hopefully third time is a charm.
