If you would like to see in very meticulous detail how one of these cars should be put together, you need to check out Chrenan's build thread over on LS1tech. https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...-turbo-ls.html

Not nearly as detailed, but this is my swap thread. https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...-ls1-swap.html
I see projects come up for sale occasionally. Some of them are priced well too, just have to know what you're looking at and looking for. I have also seen whole sets of swap parts go for very reasonable prices over on 944hybrids.

Wow I guess I’m 1 in 100, I’m special!
obligatory winter picture 'cause it's Canada (N.S.)
At the Vineyard ... also in Canada (N.S.)
12 year old son putting in the first piston in the LS6. OK....I wasn't far away!
Get one that's a proper build and you'll Love the car!

Saw this one local on Craigslist. A lot of value IMHO.

That makes me 1 ....er....2 in 100. Mine is an early car, well built cammed LS6, long tube headers, BMW HB, S2 brakes and suspension, big bars, 250 springs / 28mm TB's, Koni's. I run either an S2 or turbo transaxle, depending on the mission of the week. It weighs 1230 kgs, is a proper build and a monster! Best part is I built it with my son (then 12) and drive it daily.

My only issue with them is that they both used iron block truck engines, and an extra 100lbs of weight up front compared to the aluminum block doesn't seem great to me. Definitely keeping an eye on the BaT car though... That one pushes all the right buttons.

I think it's more a psychological thing then maybe. An iron truck engine in a a 944 just seems a tad more sacrilegious than the aluminum block out of a camaro or corvette. That, and I'll always know no matter how much weight I remove from the car, there will always be an extra hundred pounds hiding under the hood.

if youre going to swap, get any decent LS type motor to do the swap with.
youll get the fitment all sorted, take care of issues and get used to the car and power.
you can always "upgrade" to alu block later.

I think that's solid advice. Spencer is right in that the vast majority of the work is related to things other than the installation of the motor itself, that is pretty straight forward. Figuring out your wiring, instrumentation, routing coolant lines, figuring out your exhaust, brakes, etc... can take a while. In the meantime you can learn more about the LS family of motors and identify exactly which engine works best for your intended use and budget.
Whether you decide to run a junkyard iron 4.8L or a crate Aluminum 7.0L, the infrastructure supporting either option is largely the same.

There is one for sale on Bring a Trailer right now, not sure what the final hammer price will be, but should give a good indication of the market for LS1 944s
