idle RPM's to 1000 or 1100? I think normal is about 900.

You increase your fuel consumption and emissions by about 10% at idle.

Only one I can think of (and for most of us...not an issue).

if you have a tendency to overheat at idle or for the temp to go up... that could be a problem, right?

Higher idles though they increase fuel consumption slightly, and can seem a little annoying at times, will not give you the tendancy to overheat. Electric fans prevent that.

Racecars use higher idles, as well as some modified street cars with lightened flywheels, to allow for faster takeoff and reduce the chance of stalling out... this really isn't an issue except for cars with REALLY low rotating mass and grabby clutches. It will make the car slightly easier to get rolling though (preference really).

In the fascist state of California, you'd fail smog if your idle is too high -- happened to me once.

But what about the problems you had passing emissions?

The higher your RPM's, the less likely you are to overheat because the waterpump is spinning faster. I had to keep my car at like 5000RPM's once in downtown chicago because my fans had just gone out and I didn't notice the gauge until it was right at the red!

ouch, been there before. I actually had a day were i was quite a ways from home, my shift linkage had come apart so i could only use 4th and 5th gear (luckaly got it into 2nd 2 times when i had to stop for red lights) but my fans also didnt work and i before my linkage died on me i was sitting in heavy traffic for quite some time. man that day sucked.

Ohio does a 25mph rolling test. Anyone know the process in GA? I need to get plates on it soon.

Perry, I just got mine done today. 2K RPM test in 1st gear and then a 1750 RPM test in 2nd gear.

My hydrocarbon reading was only 1 point below the cutoff because I'm burning a bit of oil. If you are in the Atlanta metro area, the emissions inspections are pretty tough.

There's no way you'll pass without a cat due to the visual inspection if nothing else.
