Default 944S2 vs. 944 Turbo

I'm considering one of these cars either an S2 or a Turbo. Which would be the better buy. The S2 being a 1990 its newer than a tubo would be also without the maintaince cost of the turbo. Which would be the better buy. Speed wise and driving ability.

thanks

Chris

I would say the S2 would be very similar to your SOLD 968. The edge going to the 968 overall.

Now the turbo....more maintenence, more performance out of the box and much greater potential for performance upgrades.

Derek Bell, when asked of the differences driving a turbo car - "With the turbo car, things happen faster between corners".

If I bought a 951 I would spend a lot of $$$$$s on boost. I know I wouldnt be able to control myself. Would be fun though. So its up to you. If you want a faster track car go 951 or if you want a daily driver go S2. But there are a couple of 968s going cheap right now so you might add them to your list.

What do you want to do with it?

If it's not your daily driver and you intend to run it hard / mod it, then the Turbo would win hands down.

However, if you intend to drive it daily / in the city, or even autocrossing, then the S2 is unquestionably the better bet.

In all honesty I wish I had bought an S2 -- but then again, the initial cost of a decent S2 is much higher than that of a Turbo.

Better yet... a 968 And SC it!

Cheers,
Sach

My experience mimics that of Sach... I had a 951, wish I'd bought a S2. I drive fairly agressvily, but the turbo was just a waste on me (I was Always cussing it out for being so damn picky in the lower rpms and needing 4k+ to even move).

This question gets asked on this board about once a week. Everyone always agrees the 951 is better, under all circumstances, for all people.

Default I Think Your Statement Is Not Toatally

true! Maybe I have misread posts in the past. But to say under ALL circumstances the 951 is the best seems to be stretching the facts and opinions.

Noo..the 951 doesn't have MORE power potential. The S2 does! See DFastest951s car..S2 motor. The question of how much you plan to spend on it is where you have to make the decison. If you want to spend 10-20k on power mods you'll end up with an S2 that will smoke almost all 951s..if you want to spend 1-2k and have a really fast car, buy a turbo. I think if you add up the bills most 951 guys end up with after modifying their cars it's probably upwards of what you'd pay to turbo an S2 up really nice...

Initial cost S2s and 951s cost around the same...depending on the area one might go for more than the other. S2s seem to have higher miles a lot of the time because people do use them for daily drivers pretty often like mine). You'll find about 800 threads on this topic, so doing a search will yield more useful info

Speaking of which... if anyone wants to trade their S2 or 968 for a Turbo... yeah

I don't think so!

I do hope that you are joking, right!?!

The GENERAL consensus here is that if you plan on modifying your car, the 951 is really the only way to go. If you plan on keeping your car stock, and like low-end torque, then the 944S2 is the way to go.

As far as I know, the S2 and the turbo have very similar power/torque stats out of the box. I myself prefer a linear power curve, rather than sometimes hairy boost. I think the S2 with the whole cam chain tensioning issue would actually be more expensive to run than the turbo, unless you are doing all the work yourself.

Just my two cents but... The Turbo is MUCH more expensive to maintain, even if you find a good example. The extra stress, heat, power, and so forth that is generated by the turbo, in addition to the considerably greater complication, causes a lot more problems..

However, the same thing goes for the S2. Buy a bad example and you're screwed either way

Best wishes,
Sach
