That said, I've never owned a sub-$10k car that got so much attention, handled so well, and caused so much obsessive behavior as the 944! Once you replace the wear-items and do the maintainance, you should have a reliable sports machine.

I would plan on walking to school WAY more in the winter though! What color is that 1-owner '91?? Sounds good to me. Good luck!
Yeah, I know it's going to be a change going from a new car to a decade old car, but I'm looking forward to it. I will be walking to class in the winter, the 944 will be a toy. Oh, and it's a silver S2. Here's a pic:

You are a real piece of work. You have just now joined the ranks of 3 others on my "ignore" list.

I'd think that the value will take a hit when your warranty runs out (still have couple of years and 23K miles). If you're not going to be using a car everyday and you're worried about payments, I'd still sell the car rather than let the value depreciate on your driveway. What vehicle you get as a replacement is still an open question.

What kind of grad school are you going to? In most cases, you'll have plenty of time to pursue hobbies outside of classes -- personally, I had more spare time in grad school than I did when I had a job.
Well, I'm actually hoping to get $35,000 for the car with the modifications that are on it. It's a 2002 with 22k miles, so stock I'd hopefully get a touch over $30k for it. I've put about $8,500 into it (brakes, suspension, etc...) over the last year, so if I find the right buyer, I should be all set. The thing is that I still owe about $12k on it, so I figured I should be able to net about $20k.

I'm going to get my MBA at Dartmouth (Tuck School of Business). My first semester will be incredibly busy, but it should calm down after that. I'm looking forward to a few mountain drives. Talking to second year MBA students, it sure seems like they have plenty of free time, especially if they got a job offer the previous summer, which I hope to do.

Looks like Mike Buck's former S2! Nice! And with one owner and all the records...I would seriously consider it, since there really aren't that many clean '91's around in a color you love...etc!

B-school? Speaking from personal experience, you will have PLENTY of free time (to work on cars and such) -- you won't get so busy as to neglect car maintenance. It's more like going to summer camp than going to school.

BTW, some of us drive a 944 through the winter (with snow tires, preferably).

So I've heard. Don't think the fact that Killington was less than an hour away didn't factor into my decision to attend school in New Hampshire.

You need look no further than the 944 series. Guaranteed to have fun! It is true some specimens require more attention than others depending on previous PO's driving and maintenance. It's a front, water pumped engine with almost perfect 50/50% ballance handling. It is much roomier, comfortable than the 911 series. Generally parts for the 944 is also cheaper than the 911 series.

I think the 944 series are bashed, undeserved for the amount of maintenance required. The truth to the matter the low entry level cost of these cars puts them in hands of people who will not or cannot afford to spend on routine maintenance. Proponents of the 911 series like to brag their's more reliable. I see it differently, the 911 crowd far better equipped financially to pay for professional repairs. So the great qualizer for the 944 series is an owner who can do his own mechanical work and actually does it instead of beating the car into the ground.

And if I ever add another Porsche to my collection it will be the front, water pumped 928GT

uh YEAH! People are just SHOCKED when they see a sharp looking 944, ask what you paid for it, and then are enlightened by the answer. People then ask themselves "what am I doing wrong...?"

But back to your questions, as long as you stay on top of the regular maintenance, belts/pump every 30k miles, you're golden and a quality specimen of a 944 can last forever.

Also - is the car on its original clutch?

Cool. I've been on the track with the 944s before (me in my Audi), I'll pull them on the straights, but damn things are FAST through the corners, which is where I'd rather be fast anyway. I'm certainly not one to shy away from picking up a wrench and with the sale of my S4, I'll have cash left over to fix and maintain this car properly. Like I've said, I know I'm not buying a Honda, and that's a good thing.

I see you're from upstate NY. That's good, when my 944 breaks down this summer, I'll be sure to look you up. I'll be spending the summer at my parent's house in Burnt Hills, so I'm not too far away. Is the PCA in that region pretty active? I'd like to do some PCA events this summer if I get the 944.

Great, I believe you are an excellent owner candidate for the much deserved 944S2. BTW: That picture is absolutely gorgeous! I can tell you are in love Give your car proper maintenance and it will keep going effortlessly while giving you tons of smiles.

Believe it or not I have much more time keeping in touch in Rennlist than at home. I am a desktop phone support specialist at work with lots of inbetween time Certainly let me know if you are in the neighborhood. I can hook you up with Jon Moeller if he has not spotted you by now. Jon is in the middle of a major upgrade with his 951 for the track/DE. Yes, the PCA in our region is very active in DE's. Due to lack of time and interest in tracking and other matters, I am no longer a PCA member. Most importantly, welcome aboard!

Yep -- 944 is a great choice. You'll not only be getting a finely crafted automobile, you'll be getting us.
