Am I crazy to be looking for a 944?

As an aside, a 2002 Audi S4 with 27K miles is going to net you well over $20K -- easily $25K and possibly closer to $30K (depending on the condition). I'm going to get my MBA at Dartmouth (Tuck School of Business). My first semester will be incredibly busy, but it should calm down after that. I'm looking forward to a few mountain drives. Talking to second year MBA students, it sure seems like they have plenty of free time, especially if they got a job offer the previous summer, which I hope to do.

Looks like Mike Buck's former S2! Nice! And with one owner and all the records...I would seriously consider it, since there really aren't that many clean '91's around in a color you love...etc!

I think the 944 series are bashed, undeserved for the amount of maintenance required. The truth to the matter the low entry level cost of these cars puts them in hands of people who will not or cannot afford to spend on routine maintenance. Proponents of the 911 series like to brag their's more reliable. I see it differently, the 911 crowd far better equipped financially to pay for professional repairs. So the great qualizer for the 944 series is an owner who can do his own mechanical work and actually does it instead of beating the car into the ground.
And if I ever add another Porsche to my collection it will be the front, water pumped 928GT

But back to your questions, as long as you stay on top of the regular maintenance, belts/pump every 30k miles, you're golden and a quality specimen of a 944 can last forever.
Also - is the car on its original clutch?

I see you're from upstate NY. That's good, when my 944 breaks down this summer, I'll be sure to look you up. I'll be spending the summer at my parent's house in Burnt Hills, so I'm not too far away. Is the PCA in that region pretty active? I'd like to do some PCA events this summer if I get the 944.

Believe it or not I have much more time keeping in touch in Rennlist than at home. I am a desktop phone support specialist at work with lots of inbetween time Certainly let me know if you are in the neighborhood. I can hook you up with Jon Moeller if he has not spotted you by now. Jon is in the middle of a major upgrade with his 951 for the track/DE. Yes, the PCA in our region is very active in DE's. Due to lack of time and interest in tracking and other matters, I am no longer a PCA member. Most importantly, welcome aboard!

Cool. I've been on the track with the 944s before (me in my Audi), I'll pull them on the straights, but damn things are FAST through the corners, which is where I'd rather be fast anyway. I'm certainly not one to shy away from picking up a wrench and with the sale of my S4, I'll have cash left over to fix and maintain this car properly. Like I've said, I know I'm not buying a Honda, and that's a good thing.
