Default 944 Cabriolet for the wife!!!!

The wife says this summer shoe would like to rent a comfertable for the weekend just to drive. (LIGHT BULB GOES BONG) So I say you know they make a 944 Cabriolet, we could sell your Honda Prelude and buy you one of those. She Likes the idea and want's to find one to drive. Are they good car's? I know it's just a 944 with the lid cut off but any thoughts on buying one? The thought of his and her Porsche's makes me think oh how cool.

My biased opinion is that, yes, they are good cars. And no, they are not "a 944 with the lid cut off."

The convertible version of the 944 took two full years to develop and the chassis is considerably different from the coupe.

The way the market is now, you can't buy a better quality convertible for the money, let alone a Porsche. As long as it's been decently maintained and has recent records, you can't go wrong. We're talking less than $10K for an average example. Try getting a Boxster for twice that much.

Got one (1991 944 S2 Cabrio) 2 months ago and I love it. Can't tell you how many times people have commented on how great it looks. The best thing is how much fun it is to drive.

I am now going into search mode looking for one. I am going to try and find one local for sale and even better just to get her in one to drive to see how she likes it. That will be the key to the whole thing, just getting her into one to drive. If ther are any in NW Ohio or ther about's let me know If I can let her sit in it. cliffr@sbcglobal.net

"The convertible version of the 944 took two full years to develop and the chassis is considerably different from the coupe." -Luis de Prat

They actually were in testing since the end of 1984.....
Yea, I own a 944 cabriolet and have rode in many coupes and my parents even owned one early in my life. The Cabriolet does have alittle more body flex but supriseingly at the limit there is almost no diffrence in handling characteristics.. The other thing is the cabriolet may weight 147lbs more then the coupe but ther weight is really low down. The cabriolet compared to a equally equiped coupe will: Outbrake, Hold higher Skidpad, Less bodyroll, Less understeer. The real advantage to the coupe is a slightly faster 0-60 and 0-100....

Ummmmm, they are not just 944 with the top chopped. The chassis and rear or the car is quite different. As well the windshield has a greater rake than the coupes. The doors are also different. Check mine out.

Cliff,

Where in Ohio are you? IIRC there was a 944S2 Cab for sale in either Rocky River or Lakewood ( Cleveland's West Side) recently, but I can't remember where I saw it listed.

If you remmber let me know. I have found 2 within easy reach under 200 miles from me and one in Oregon the other side of the planet from Ohio. Of course she really like's the color of the one in Oregon. She said no to a white one in Pittsburgh. I found a red one 80 miles away. But she snobbed her nose at us having matching red car's. (Whew) Hate to fly half way across the country to look at a car.

Forgot where in FIndlay Ohio 2 hours west of Cleveland. Close to Toledo, Columbus,Dayton, Detriot, Indy, Cinci would be a 3 hour drive. You would think ther would be one at least close we could drive to just look at to see how well she likes it. She would be really pissed to sell the Prelude that she loves and buy the 944 Cab to find out she hates it.

Did not mean to offend anybody with the comment " a 944 with the top cut off" I was refering to it being the same car just a Cab.

She is really stuck on the Black on on the other side of the world. Any ideas how shipping works

Default newbie w/ 944 s2 cabrio

I just bought a '90 S2 cabrio this weekend, black w/ linen interior. WOW. Drove back from South Carolina on back roads thru Augusta, Waycross, & Jessup w/ top down & blasting. Temperature was ~78 & clear skies. Life just don't get no better. Anybody know the absolutely best top shop in central Florida?

They really were quite well engineered-I went directly from a 968 coupe to a 968 cab, and while there is a little scuttle shake it's not too bad at all. And there isn't a huge weight penalty over the coupe.
