Hi,

The culprit is most likely the front bearing unit (closest to the engine) in the torque tube has moved and has probably come apart. This is due to the split torque tube design and is a very common failure of split tubes found in 944S2 and most 968s except later ones where Porsche stopped using split tubes.

The split will widen with age and unfortunately exactly where the front bearing is located. This then allows the front bearing unit to move under operation and will usually get caught at an angle to the drive shaft and tear itself apart. So you then have a long length of drive shaft which is unsupported and then other parts become damaged with the operation of the clutch due to all of this movement. The strike of the clamping bolt against the inner torque tube is a very good clue to this event as well as a lot of movement of the drive shaft.

All of this was exacerbated with the higher RPMs your drive train saw with your track excursions.

Hope this helps.

To put clarity on the situation, the problem here is definitely the torque tube. Total failure. The split design has allowed the tube to enlarge and the front bearing has slide rearward. The bearing failure has created two areas of significant damage. Solving this problem has been quite an adventure which I've documented in another thread. See thread: Making a 968 torque tube.
