Default AC compressor

Time to fix my AC. Looks like I have a leaky compressor. Don’t won’t a rebuild. Are all the compressors the same? I’m looking for a replacement for my 91S2. Any leads on new units?

I checked Griffiths. They offer rebuild Denso compressors. I found new ones cheaper. Interesting they offer another new replacement.

No and Yes.

The Denso compressor we offer is marketed by Denso as remanufactured (its a marketing thing).
However, if you disassemble the unit you will find all the parts are new.
I can say that if Denso wanted to remanufacture used compressors you have to imagine all the steps and processes required
to accomplish that:
1) Have used compressors, taken from dealerships, parts stores, salvage yards, across the world, gathered together at regional
locations, in boxes, placed into crates and then into a container. Shipped back to Denso, maybe Japan. Taken off the ship,
moved to their factory. Taken out of the container, out of the crates, out of the boxes.
2) Visually inspected and separated into 'rebuild able' and 'not likely (cracked cases, broken ears, etc).
3) First wash or cleaning to remove years of external grease.
4) Disassembled, all the various parts sent to work areas.
5) Separated parts washed again.
6) Many pulley's tossed away because the thickness of the clutch side is too thin.
7) Many clutch coils tossed away because the wire that was epoxied in is cut or torn, or the epoxy is cracked due to overheating.
8) Pistons tossed away.
9) Wobble plates on shafts recut? doubtful. Maybe press off the aluminum plate and press on another? Oiy.
10) Center case halve's pinned together and jig bored or ground cylinder bores, expensive operation.
11) New pistons, bearings, half bearings, reed valves,etc. We are starting to add up parts.
12) Inspect, rebox, put them on skids or in crates, back in a container and shipped back to you.

No, it is less costly to build new from scratch.

You have to read the description of the "Denso" compressor retailers offer on line. Some are referencing the Denso part number
but are selling a 'rebuilt' compressor and the rebuilder is not Denso. "Other" rebuilders cannot do all the processes mentioned, they can only
reseal or replace a few bearings.

So, we specify on our website "Remanufactured Denso Compressor & Clutch", and if you read further in various sections of our website
we state "The quality is “like new. This means if you disassemble one of our Denso rebuilt compressors, you will see new quality parts. Unlike aftermarket rebuilders offering cheap rebuilds, these Denso units are like new!"
We cannot simply say new.

And, yes you can always find something "cheaper" or at lessor price.
But I don't think you will find the other part of the price : service and technical support.

Out of curiosity, what's the current price for an as-new Denso compressor? Do you sell new, as well?

The 944 Denso compressor we sell, in a Denso box, from Denso, we do not sell alone.
We sell the compressor with a new compressor to condenser barrier hose line assembly,
refrigerant oil, R134a charge port adapters (for years prior to 1993), new drier and
complete system o-ring kit.

So, if you are comparing our product to Ebay (cough), AmaZon or other, its not apples and apples.

I was going to suggest maybe re-sealing the one you've got but after the description of what "remanufactured" means I think I'll just shut up...

There is this outfit in Arizona that sells re-seal kits for these compressors cheap though. I re-sealed my 928 a few years ago and it works great. Century Auto Air in Tuscon if you're interested.

PS: They put out a YouTube video showing how to re-seal a compressor with their kits. It's pretty strait forward, doesn't take much time.

PPS: It does take a special tool to get the clutch off though, I got one used on eBay for $29. If you're willing to pay round trip shipping I'll lend it to you but it would probably be cheaper to just buy one.

I installed the Griffiths Keuhl kit and converted from R12 to R143a + Ester Oil six years ago in my 1991 S2.
No issues since.

may I ask why you went with the Kuehl? Is it better than the Denso?

If I recall, I was interested in something "new" instead of "like new", but
more so the kit had everything I needed and made it easy.

Buy an o-ring kit and try to reseal at the compressor, I had a pretty good leak there from a bad o ring, if your system was converted to 134 and didn’t have the o rings replaced, this is a likely spot to see them fail.

I bought the Deluxe R134a Conversion Kit and the 10P15 Compressor Seal Kit from Griffiths a couple of years back. Flushed the lines with AC Flush and purged with dry instrument air for an hour. Added oil (I used PAG), assembled, and pulled full vacuum for ~40 minutes. Zero leakdown after 20 min. Charged with 30 oz R134a. Piece of cake. Haven't touched it since!

Sometimes you get lucky.

Cut o rings. Looks like a mis assembly from the oringinal compressor.
Ok I finally went with the Griffiths kit. I found the oringinal o rings on the compressor manifold were pinched in half! Likely the cause of the leak. Unfortunate since the car has low miles and the previous owner complained the AC always gave him trouble.
charge hopefully tomorrow! Can’t wait its hot in Ohio!
