Using the highly accurate and scientific method of placing the factory hood on a run-of-the-mill bathroom scale...... I come up with about 45lbs or so.
As to worn struts, mine aren't in the greatest of the condition, they held up the factory hood, but only barely. However with the light weight fiberglass hood, they are way too strong. It only takes one of the struts to hold up the hood, but this causes a pressure point and a tweaking of the hood if you are only using one.
The rod may be the way to go, if you don't mind that route, I'd just prefer to have some lifts on it myself(laziness?). The bushing to the front release spring broke in my accident, so the spring doesn't seat correctly. Once I get that fixed, I'll be able to determine whether the spring rate on the hood release is too stiff, I'm sure it is. But cutting a coil off the front spring won't be an issue.
As to my happiness with it? I'm happy. I wish it were marked for the windshield squirter locations, and I wish I didn't have to drill out that adjustment rod hole, but overall the hood went on the car a heck of a lot easier than the rest of the front end is going together. I'm almost wishing I bought everything from GT-Racing, but I'm sure fit and finish would be similar(refering to fenders, header panel and airdam, NOT the hood)...
Forgot to mention, yes, I'd recommend the hood. As to the rest of the stuff, that's a different story
