Unhappy 86' 944 - Speedometer at 0 until 40 mph

My odometer and tripometer do not work and the speedo reads 0 until I hit 40 mph. I have found the many posts on how to fix the odometer and tripometer problems, but I can't find any posts explaining how to fix the speedo jump.

Can anyone help???

Thanks for any informaiton and taking the time to provide it in advace.

Mine tends to stick until I get up to about 30-40. It happens more often in the cold weather. It usually starts reading when I bump the bottom of the dash.

maybe its time for a new speedomiter cable, or the speedomiter cable is loose? (well, at least that would be the early posrche fix, since we have them, not sure about those weird water cooled cars )

id check it out before breakaing into the speedomiter itself.

Not the cable...no cable on an '86. The speedo is electronic, it just has wires. Mine sticks once in a while (mostly when it is cold). A good tap on the dash in front of it fixes the problem.

Mine does the same, but I now have a Road Angel so I tend to ignor the Porsche speedo.

A tap on the dash will get the Porsche speedo going when ever it is being a bit lazy though.

When I was inside replacing the O gear. I cleaned everything with contact cleaner and lubricated everything I saw and touched and have had no problems since. even in the cold.. reccomend replacing all the bulbs while inthere though. some won't work when done if you don't... Or keep tapping the front both work..

Edit, I think I got the gear from KLA made of delrin instead of the rubber or what ever it was..

I am blown away by all the responses to my post! This was my first first post on Rennlist. I posted this question on alt.autos.porsche.944 on the 28th and the only response lead me here.

I have been doing the tapping of the dashboard trick, but it's starting to do it every time the car is stopped. Maybe the car just wants the attention. I'll try to clean and lube everything when I replace that O gear.

Thanks again for all the responses. I am really psyched that I now can post questions about my car and they will actually get answers!

Now I'm going back and thanking the guy who brought me here from the newsgroup.

Thanks!!!

You may also want to make sure that the needle is not bent. I was replacing the odometer gear and bent the spindle under the needle slightly when I putting the needle back on. It had the same problem until I reopened it and straightened it out.

RBM,

Where in Florida are you? Some of us from Miami/Ft. Lauderdale have had a get together or two and are always looking for more to join. --Tom

Tom M'Guinn,

I would do anything just to finally speak to ONE 944 owner!! In almost 18 years I've yet to meet one. I have friends in Ft. Lauderdale and go there often. I am currently in Gainesville, but I'm moving down to either West Palm or Lauderdale in the next couple months. However, if there is something coming up before then, I'd love to attend.

Send any information to my email: ripmunsterman@hotmail.com

Really looking forward to any info!

Rip

Had the same problem with mine. Tried replacing gear & sender at transaxle
but didn't help. Last year I was refacing my gauges & discovered the electrical connection to the speedo wasn't on all the way. After I finished the job And made sure I had a good connection the speedo worked fine.

Tom M'Guinn,

Just to clarify, by saying "In almost 18 years I've yet to meet one" I mean that I haven't spoken to another 944 owner in person in almost 18 years as a 944 owner. Don't worry, I'm not 17! ha ha!

TOTLSTC,

I have my speedo apart and waiting for the new O gear. I'll double check all the connections when I go to put everything back together.

Thanks for the tip!
