Lightbulb Nose Panel Breather Holes

How can I cut through my nose panel so I can get it to look like the one in the pictures? I've seen the one for sale, and it's kinda pricey, so cutting it wouldn't hurt. Can I get a body shop to do this for me? If so, how much?

I used a dremel to cut mine out. I used a small plastic box as a template.

Cyrus - A dremel tool works well for this. I had my father in law lay out a pattern in masking tape on the panel and Red1 cut it out. I have to say that if you want it to look really good you are going to have to do some work to it when you are done cutting. I let the body shop do mine as it needed a respray anyhow. If yours is a daily driver (the one on top is not, I dont think, and has sunroof strip around the holes, car belongs to OZ951 BTW) I would recommend having it repainted after. A rat tail file and you could file the rough edges down but I think it would look unfinished. I can snap some more pics at the house tonight.

Matt, I remember earlier I saw some pictures that you took of what yours turned to look like. Did your holes look like OZ's?
Thanks.

I'm not a great fan of putting the holes in the nose of 944 NA's but I thought I would add a little to punching holes in sheet metal.

To do a vent hole properly you need to form a lip around the opening as the hole is punched. This is a part of the punch shoulder that continues through the punched hole and forms (flows) the sheet metal around a radiused shoulder on the die. Gives it a proper finish.

I would look in the business to business yellow pages for sheet metal shops. Many of the automated shops can set up and do this. May cost as much as a used 931 panel though.

I did the vents for air to the intercooler on my 951 swap. I don't see a reason to do it to an NA car unless you decide to put a cone filter in there or something of the sort. Some have ducted the vents for the radiator and reported that their engine temps came down under hard running, that could be another reason to do it, if you race.

What's all this talk about an NA?
I have read in a Performance Products article, about how these holes did give them an advantage at the track, against a 951 w/o them.
They give the car a more aggressive look, and I am really attracted to the 2 hole design. I haven't seen many 931 panels on 951s, but i'll do a search.

the 931 panel wont fit a 951 because its the same as an n/a panel and an n/a panel is shorter than a 951 because of the intercooler.....whew!

I love the 931 look. Wonder how hard it would be to just get the plastic inserts to put in holes cut in my nose piece...
With the dremmel approach, I would worry about the edges rusting. SoCal are you talking about some type of rolling? Can't visiualize what you are saying.

There has been a lot of debate on here bewteen various listers as to whether or not a vented nose panel is a good or bad thing, due to airflow. I would be inclined to think that it would be a good thing, but I'm no airflow or aerodynamics expert. I can say that I noticed a slight lowering of temp after I installed my vented panel on my non-turbo.

That being said, the photo below is of a 951 that a fellow lister installed a 931 nose panel on. He had to extend the front of it slightly by adding more sheet metal and filler to replicate the extra curved material. He also used 944/924 headlight covers to fit the nose panel contour so that additional work did not need to be done there. I think it looks very factory. This is probably a lot more work than simply cutting holes, but it looks much better and has the proper mounts for the vents.

I Had Body Shop Do Mine - It Took Them 10 mins. They Also Had To Cut The Intercooler Vent Behind The Panel.
