M44.11, plus 1989 924S vin, I would say that is one cool piece of random Porsche history.

Thank you,
I agree and am trying to decide if I should drive it or restore and show.
I’m more a drive or race guy than show guy. But.....if it is that rare.
It is a very cool looking car.

Maybe worth a call to PCA NA? See if they can issue at COA on it?

If so they changed bumpers, hatch, etc on this. Except the vin reflects a 924S. Just a 1989.
The Porsche Pet system says the car doesn’t exist. I’m contacting Porsche now to try to find out more.
It also has a Euro front bumper and had been owned by some US military at some point.

And the reason I ask about the VIN, I know of at least 1 944 that was converted to 924 looks by replacing the rear fenders, and then bolting 924 fenders on the front. Why it was done, I have no idea. But I found it a few years ago when I was considering using a 944 turbo as the basis of a 924 GTS tribute built.

Agree, I’m already working on that. But COA’s are not always accurate nor complete.

True that about the CoAs, would you mind posting the full VIN? I know that for the 968s Porsche started with each series and model year with 61. They retained the first 60 VINs.
My cab is #9, WP0CA2963NS840069.

Post some pictures of the car when you get a chance.

Sounds like a nice find. Was it local to you?

I dont have it on me at moment but it decodes to a 924S, but a 1989 year model.
End of vin is in single digits which means it should have been one of very few made.

FYI in the UK there are six MY89 924S registered, two licensed and four unlicensed. This chart shows the six cars, I have the “manufactured” date tab highlighted not the first “registered” tab, so it is listing cars by their build date not when they were sold and licensed. HowManyLeft.co.uk

There are a few 924S with later interior and the larger capacity engine. From what I have read, it was a very small run of cars, somewhere between 18 and 24. They were done as a study for the 924 S2 project. The 924 S2 project was shelved in favor of the 984 concept which too was shelved in favor of the 986. I recall they have the 944 S2 running gear (brakes, suspension, etc.). Some of them have the later bridge wing, and Accessory skirts and front and rear aprons. A few were equipped with several items from Exclusive, and a "luxurious" automatic.

As is common with prototypes, many were probably destroyed. The rest usually went to people that worked at Porsche. I think I've seen pictures of maybe half a dozen.

The VIN is likely WPOZZZ92ZKN4000xx. If the car has an option sticker, the first option should denote country. Since they are prototypes, it is probably C00 or C01 which would denote Germany.

It also has a Euro front bumper and had been owned by some US military at some point.

The bumpers and hatch could be original, some of the 924S 2.7s have the Accessory body kit and later bridge wing. The car was not officially available, so PET would not recognize it.

It was likely purchased by someone stationed in Europe, then exported. Usually history as a prototype is not advertised. There are several stories of people unknowingly getting special cars.

This is number six. The exterior is likely as it left the factory, but the interior has been changed slightly. The wheel is from a 986 or 996, and the seats are from a 96 or newer 993.

This has the makings of an interesting back story. Can't wait to see what you find out.
