Default Any tricks to getting the crank pulley off?

I'm doing a lot of work to my 87S including all new front seals. The crank seal needs replacing plus I have a new geared sleeve to install. However, the bloody thing is stuck hard. I can only get about 1mm of movement.

So far I've tried pullers that are causing a little damage so I don't want to get to aggressive. It's pretty frustrating. Any tricks from those that have run into this before?

Mine have always slid out using a big pair of channel locks.

I can't remember ever not having to use a rubber mallet to loosen one up before. Just to break it free so a gear puller will pull it off easily.

where do you get a 5.5" channel lock? LOL

rubber mallet against the face of the pulley (perpendicular to the ground), tapped around in a circle, and a few taps on the belt groove side (to give it some radial jiggling) between gear puller sessions usually gets it.

penetrating oil helps unstick from the woodruff key too.

Whoops, I was thinking about the oil pump drive sleeve. Pulley itself comes off with 4-off M6 bolts. The drive gears for the belts just slip off but the woodruff key can cause them to stick. I would tap them inward lightly to break them free. And tap on the edges in a circular motion lightly until you can work it off.

You took the big bolt out of the crank, right? Maybe it got off-center a bit -- a puller "should" get it off...

Of course. A puller isn't really getting behind it but that's my only option. It probably hasn't been off in 30 years so it's a bit stuck to the crank. The balance shaft gear I've had off before so that was no problem.

i misunderstood originally - i thought you were fighting the accessory (AC/alt) pulley, not the timing belt drive gear.

yea, that one gets sticky sometimes.
can you (carefully) apply heat with a mini torch of some kind ?

Can you get a split plate gear puller in behind the pulley?that might limit the damage and give you some good pulling advantage.

Oh I misunderstood too. If memory serves, I had to grind and modify a puller to get a good grip on that one.

I'm doing the same on my 968. Yesterday I tried to unsrcew the M16x1.5x60 Crankshaft Bolt (Torque: 210 Nm). But unsuccessful, my socket broke.
Now I'm not sure if it's not a left-hand thread.

Could you do my a favour and confirm, that's a normal right-hand thread on the bolt. Thank you.

Good luck removing your stuck crank pulley. I hope mine will go off easier.
Tomorrow I will buy another/better socket.

HFB i 100% confirm the crank bolt is a standard "righty tighty lefty loosy" thread.

not even $2 harbor freight (Taiwan) sockets break doing that though...

Thanks, got it out. The "No Taiwan socket" did it.
