Default Valve guides - std vs oversize?

I gave my 944T head to the shop for a rebuild.
I also brought seals and valve guides (Got the 944.104.328.51 - 1st oversize).

Today a received a call from the shop that the guides brought are too big to fit and he told me I need to bring him the standard size.

In the PET and on all major store websites I see only the 1st oversize and I understand that they need to be grind to the correct size 0.06-0.08 press fit according to the workshop manual.

Is the machine shop owner correct that the standard size is available and should be used instead of the guides I bought?

I am based in Israel so each change like that has a lengthy turnaround time as I need to order the parts from abroad...

You can still get "original size" from Porsche, directly.

I see, thank you.
The engine has over 100K miles.
Is there a downside to using the original size (I am asking because they seem quite hard to trace in shops)?

Don't know, I've only ever bought/used the 1st oversize and never had a problem (never had a shop tell me they couldn't make it work, have had lots of 944 heads done over the years)

I called Porsche Center in Germany and according to the guy at the parts department check, the standard size are NLA.

Therefore, I asked the machine shop to grind the oversize guide for press fit to the head.

Default Head is back in the car - first start

Head was back from the shop last week and today I finally finished putting everything back together and got the engine back alive.

First couple of minutes were scary as the engine sounded like it was about to blow up (I read about the lifters knocking, but when I heard the noise live, I was really scared).

I stopped the engine within a couple of seconds and took apart the oil filter to make sure oil was going through it.

It was full of oil which brought my hopes up again.
I started the engine again and it sounded much better.

After the engine started to heat up, smoke and strong exhaust smell came from the exhaust manifold side.
This is where I am at the moment. Waiting for the engine to cool down so that I can check what's wrong with it.

I did put the exhaust header gaskets and torqued it to spec.
on the two connections to the exhaust pipes, I put new metal rings for sealing.
I could not torque it exactly to spec as access is very limited to these nuts and bolts, but I did make sure it was quite tight.

Is there and other sealing rings or gasket that need to go in there?

the new gaskets will smoke for a bit as they "break in", i believe they have some kind of coating on them to preserve new gaskets on the shelf.

it's all normal.

and yes the lifters do make a god-awful sound when pumping up for the first time.

This is the first time ever I get near the engine.
So far the most I did was replacing vacuums lines and sway bars...

How long does it take for the smell to go way?

I was suspecting an exhaust leak from one of the connections because the smell is really close to exhaust fumes.

I ran the engine for more than 5 minutes until I could not stay in the close garage because of the smoke...

never run the car with the garage closed...really the tailpipe should be sticking out from the garage when running it...

it will take a few heat cycles, then you will want to double check how tight the exhaust nuts are

Spencer, thank you so much for all the help.

I have used the victor Reinz kit:

I havre used all the kit seals except for two of the four round steel seals.<br/>

I could not figure out the place for the other two... Now I think I missed it.

I placed two of round metal seal rings here (The triangle type gasket show in the PET was not there)

not sure what those rings are for, my memory is getting fuzzy.
944 definitely uses triangle gaskets at that joint.

This is how the bottom connection looks like/

I am sure I took off the old seal ring from there and placed the new ones from the kit (only 2 out of the 4 in the kit).

I did not use any other gasket in that connection.
