Default What does the flywheel sensor sense?

Ok, I have posed this question probably 3 times and I hope anyone who has already answered isn't insulted... I'm just trying to get as many people who can answer to answer because I'm getting different answers from people I would consider "gurus".

My question is this:

Can I use the 968 engine, 951 flywheel, 951 clutch/pp/tb, 951 bell housing, 944 na torque tube? Someone said I need to use a 944 S2 flywheel because of the sensors or teeth won't match up with the 968 engine if I use the 951 flywheel...?

Thoughts? I NEED to get these parts ordered but I wanted to get a last-ditch pool of answers to make my decision from, you know? Sort of like, polling the audience.

Thanks,
Matt

I'm not a guru, so take my reply with a grain of salt. The flywheel sensor measures the the engine speed for the DME. Here's a page that I came across that describes the changes made for the 16v engine and why the 968 DME wants a different flywheel: Motronic Math.

As a reference, I have a 944S2 flywheel with a 968 engine and it works -- everything else is 944na. I recently talked a guy who was doing a 968 engine swap using a 944S flywheel and the engine craps out at 3000rpm everytime [which may or may not be the fault of the flywheel].

Hope that helps.

Yeap. Have to have the same type "teeth" on the flywheel as the 'S', 'S2' and 968 with the single sensor for the DOHC engines to work.

That means you also have to have the harness and the DME from a DOHC car.

The clutch disc and plate can be from the turbos. Don't know about the bell housing.

Hey Matt, I was going to put up a post today asking you how the S3 project was going.

SoCal is right about the flywheels. Use the S or S2 flywheel. The 951 or 944NA unit won't work.

Now why does that one conversion stop at 3000 rpms?

Joe, Is he on this forum?

Nope -- this guy isn't on the forum, just an acquaintance of a friend of an acquaintance of mine [which makes him didley-squat...]. But he was having trouble with the engine swap and we were comparing notes. I pointed him towards Rennlist, but the man never showed. Oh well...

Matt, it would help if you told us what kind of harness/dme you will be using.
Ideally, for a 968 engine, you want to run either a 968 DMF/clutch/housing with 968 torque tube or 944S2 FW/clutch/housing and torque tube (advantage of being able to change your clutch without removing torque tube). In either setup I am assuming you are using 968 dme/harness.
BTW, I have a source for all the 968 parts you need in case you are looking.

I am using the 968 DME. I'd like to use the 944na torque tube for now, so the 951 bellhousing is the way to go. Knowing that, what am I left with? From these posts (thanks!) I think the way to go is 951 clutch, 944S2 flywheel?

Thanks,
Matt
