Default Looking at a 968 coupe --I bought it.

Went out to look at a Boxster today, and found a '94 968 Coupe instead. 108,000 miles.

Looks to be in decent shape overall, but leaks oil near the power steering pump, and I'm pretty sure it could use a new clutch as well. Seems to run strong, but I've never driven a great 968, so I have nothing to compare it to except my 924S and 911. Nearly perfect dash, just one 1/8th inch crack near on of the vents. A bit of carpet discoloration in the rear and wear on the driver's side window ledge. Seats in decent shape, but driver's power seat bottom does not tilt.

Assuming the clutch and the oil leak are the only (or worst) things wrong with this car, what is a reasonable asking amount from a dealer? Above or below 10k? Above or below 15k?

Should I jump on it? I have a PPI scheduled for Wednesday. I missed this car by one day at another dealer... they wholesaled it to this dealer the day after they got it, and this dealer wants $1500 less.

PS: Ignore the dust on the white paint. it's just dust and not crappy paint. Wiped right off, and the paint looks decent underneath. But.. is it normal for the lower front and rear to be slightly different colors than the rest of the body?

Give jeff968 a shout here - or post this over on the 968 section. If you have the VIN, Sir Jeff can tell the details on this car regarding factory options and other details.

Price?
$10,000.

Am I missing a 968 section somewhere? This appears to be the 924/931/944/951/968 Forum....

I'll check out the registry, thanks!

You have to scroll down much further (below the general discussion forums for things like Watches, jobs or Firearms...)

Ahhaaa, I see, thanks! I don't recall it being like that when I used to visit here a lot more. It's been a long time.

Steering fluid leak could be as simple as the reservoir and hose feeding into the pump.
While the clutch can be replaced from below (without full removing the trans and torque tube) the flywheel itself can be costly (dual mass)

I have that same carpet in my car and it has the same pink/purpleish tint to it.

Car looks to be in pretty good shape overall; if anything values are starting to climb a bit. I'd say 10k is a very fair price.

It should pull like a scalded cat in 2nd gear from down around 2000 all the way to 6500 rpm. You should hear/feel a slight change and surge around 4000-4500 as the variocam shifts over.

Fluid tasted like oil to me. There was some oil spray along the framerails, too... definitely not a slow drip.

Scalded cat? I'd say you're right about that.

Not to ruffle feathers but MOST of the time someone posts their motor on an engine stand for a rebuild, it has a K&N oil filter.

The cruise cable should run under the vanity cover.

Coolant looks a tad low and dark.

I've got that same exact interior. Good to know the classic grey carpet fades to purplepink consistently....not just in my car LOL

Seems like a pretty fair price at $10k Love the white wheels, unique.

Seems like a great price to me, I'd jump on it.

What's the state of repairs/maintenance? Could be a bargaining point but I don't think a deal breaker.

PPI completed today. Haven't decided yet.

Quote $4000 for the clutch, and $4000 for the timing belt, VERy leaky water pumnp, rollers, seals, etc..

What about the cam chain tensioner? does it need ball joints or control arms? Ten isn't a great price if you are going to have 20 into it before it is done. How much is an early Cayman with 30k miles?

That's $10K of work and a lot of personal time spent fixing little things. If you have the time and will to do it...

Personally, after bringing several of these project cars up to 100% as a labor of love, I just wouldn't have the patience to do another one. Loved it the first and second time around, though.

968 6-speed coupes are fairly rare, so i wouldn't pass lightly if you think the car is good outside of the maintenance needed. The prices quoted feel pretty high for the clutch and especially the timing belt/WP service. Outside of the clutch, its typical wear for a car of this age. Do the work yourself! The 968 clutch is much easier to do than the 944 clutch, you don't have to drop the trans or TT. Typically the 968 can go longer than 30k on a timing belt, but if the rollers are bad, doing it is worth it.

10 is a little high, use the PPI to your advantage and try to get it for less.
