junking an old car?
Has anyone ever junked an old car? I've got a shell left an was wondering how to get rid of it. What's the norm?
Do you pay someone to come get it? Some auto salvage yards advertise "free" car removal.
But my car is pretty much stripped of anything salvagable so I don't even know if a junk yard would want it. The wheels are gone so I couldn't even tow it there.
At what point do junk yards stop wanting your car and you start having to pay them to come and get it?

Depends on the yard. If it's Porsche, there may be someone near you who is looking for a stripped tub to start a race car project. Otherwise, you may have to just get a torch and cut the car into managable chunks and haul it to a place that takes scrap metal. Be sure to remove the gas tank before playing with the torch!!

Um cut off the VIN and leave it in a parking lot....it will get towed to the junkyard Seriously though, scrap yard is the way to go, you get paid by weight for the metal, so you might actually get a few bucks from it.

I just did this with the shell of a '83 na 944. I paid $50.00 to have a salvage place come get it. Their requirements were, 1: you must have clear title. 2: nothing but metal, no rubber/plastic/fabric/glass of any sizeable amount. There was nothing left on this car except the rear 1/4's and back panel.
The shell I had couldn't have weighed even a half a ton. I could have cut it up into manageable peices myself, thrown it in my truck, and got the price of about $45.00 a ton for it. IT WASN'T WORTH THE EFFORT! Blades for a recpricating saw are not cheap, figure on breaking or ruining at least a handfull of these! plus your time and frustration! I could have used my torch, NAH.......messy.....nasty....... the gas isn't free either! not interested.
If you can find someone to come and get an old car out of your hair/life for no cost to you...........JUMP ON IT! But you will probably be required to have the title to this vehicle however.
"At what point" you ask, well......you'll just have to call the junk yards and ask. Their all a little different about this. To many variables. HTH

I agree with granite, gas isn't cheap, nor are all the blades you'd go through. when I had 0 money one time, I did unfortunately do the vin removal and parking lot to an old jetta. I'd suck it up for the $50 and have someone drag it away

Granite...when they hauled your shell off was it still a roller or were the wheels gone? That's gonna be my big decision point. I'd like to keep all the wheels, hubs and suspension pieces. But then the car can no longer be rolled around or towed. I can live with the $50 charge if they will drag whatever is left away.

This is what they got, without the carpet scraps and the windshield thats sitting up front. ( I took that to the dump ground myself later).
Salvage guy picked it up with a tilt/slide bed truck.

aw man, beat me to the bed. that would be awesome, like the plastic racecar beds, only, it weighs a ****load.
you'd probably have to call the company and see if they'd tow it completely naked like that - most places probably won't want to **** up their beds. You could probably lift it up, slide some junk wheels and tires under it so it wouldn't scratch everything up.
